Stans Flow EX rims with slicks?

Hi folks,

So last year I upgraded my bike's rims from the stock Alexrims to a pair of Stans Flow EX rims as I do a bit of "aggressive trail" riding and sometimes a bit of downhill on my Scott.

A problem I had (sadly) was that I battled to get a pair of Continental Sport road tyres onto my bike for the Argus Cycle Tour last year.

I damaged the rim's decals and destroyed two sets of tyre levers so in my infinite wisdom I pumped my offroad tyres to their max psi to counter drag and increase rolling speed, but rear tyre went bang 60km into the race as the road surface heated up etc.

To avoid that situation again, I would like to know if anyone successfully managed to get road tyres onto rims like the Stans Flow EX which are a little broader than the average rims?

Perhaps another brand of tyre other than Continental will have a slightly more favourable dimension that's a little ore accommodating?

Many thanks!

Kenda make a 29 x 1.5" slick called a Tendril. Your LBS should stock them - ask them if you can try one on the rim. The extra width should help on the wider rims.

Okay cool thanks for the advice all. Will check out some of the LBS's this weekend and see what works. Worst case scenario is buying a second pair of cheapie rims and slapping my conti sports on those.

get a road bike for road races....

This, putting slicks on those wheels/bike looks silly and cost plenty if you have to change your tubeless conversion the whole time.

im considering slicks this year. 1. I have a pair of slicks in the garage and 2. My sealant needs a top up so im in two minds. Change tyres for CPCT or change sealant and add some HTFU...

rather not boerklong, its a schlep and cost money(new tyres and conversions that you loose) for not a great lot of benefit and did I mention that it looks hondnaai(kind of like when a model smokes a pipe...it doesnt work) and your tyres won't make you competitive...a roadbike's gearing is its magic sauce. So even with slicks, the roadies will drop you...you wont be able to hang with the competitive groups.

You can run the 1.5" slicks tubeless, no need to go above 4 bar.

Does look dumb though.

Have been struggling with same problem. Did Argus two years ago with Kenda 700 x 35 on my Alex rims and were not impressed. Peddled easier but it felt if I lost top speed due to loss in overall diameter?? Bumpy ride and looks did not help either. Also changed to flow rims now. Have been looking at The wider (and higher) slicks like Continental Comfort Contact 700 x 47 or 700 x 54.

Still cant decide though.

I have had similar projects for a  few customers, my best results are on kenda 700x35 tyres, pumped to 60psi - tyres normally sell at R140 ea.

If you have trouble fitting tyres, use sunlight soap to fit and seat the tyre and wash the excess off afterwards.

Did your tyre blow or did the tube blow in the tyre, this could have been to over inflation of the tube or the tyre was a dud or you hit something very sharp.

You will obviously have a bumpy ride, its the same as riding a roadie with tyres pumped to 10bar / approx 120psi, this is something you have to get used to.

Enjoy
