At that price range also look at the GT Zaskar Expert, Full LX groupset on bike. If you stretch a grand further the Commencal Supernormal Deluxe is also very nice option. Silverback Sierra also nice bike.

Nice, except for their entry level bikes Merida dont usually skimp on components. I have seen some bike shops (no names Wink)chance it and swop out for lesser components.

I think the Merida is way better than the GT. Another option is the Opus Fhast2. See if you can get the 07 one. Full X9 with juicy 5's, raceface cranks and Mavix crossride wheels, alloy/carbon frame, rockshox recon fork. They should go for under 12k.

scotty - merida 500D ? are they skimping there? or the silverback nebraska ? At that sort of price difference, will one notice the difference in components that much?

I bought one in October. It rides well and was good value for money (of course, being my first proper MTB, I don't really have anything to compare it to)

Only downside is that the pedals are pretty k*k. No matter how loose, or tight, I made them I had severe difficulty unclipping and fell a few times because of this. I've read about similar problems in other M505 reviews.

I've now replaced them with an old pair of M520s that I had lying around and am really happy.

from what i hear is that Merida gives you the best value for money.....meaning good components for the price. rather have a alu frame with good components than a carbon frame with k@k components

You might also look at the Silverback bikes.

I didn't even think about them when I bought the Merida but, were I to make the buying decision again, they're about the only thing that would stop me getting the Merida again.
