Doable for me ?

Am 66 have done 17 or 18 Argus rides , a few sub 3 's some 20 years ago , an Epic etc .

The last few years I just rode the Argus to be part of the fun not racing .

Build a SS last year and enjoy riding it once a week on a flattish road and really enjoying it .

Today I thought why not do it on the SS ?

What do you say ?

Thanks

I am not so sure that it is a good idea, firstly, you are slightly to young and secondly you've only done the Argus a few times. What I recommend is maybe a few more years of geared riding and then switch to SS in a few year's time.

pfft...do it man! if you are not worried about finishing times then what is there to worry about?

That mixed ball of indecisiveness you feel is probably mostly excitement anyways.

The bigger question is what ratio to go for?

Seen a fee guys do it on SS before, however be prepared for a 4hr+ time.

A buddy was part of a SS group that road it last year.Sadly he didn't finish but I suppose its crazy fun:D

Great, just do it! Hope you are on a Banting diet. Those knees will be going up and down like crazy and needs a lot of grease to keep it lubricated.

Currently running 38 x18 but that is flattish roads around Durbanville . Spinning out at about 26 kph so will have to go lower for the hills but will then be spinning out at lower speeds = no drafting on the Blue Route .

It's a very fine balance between spinning out on the straights or hating the climbs.

However if push comes to shove rather gear it slightly higher so that you can draft on the straights and conserve energy, do not gear for the hills, you will spin like a demented hamster for 90% of the race (Done that myself in the past)

26km/h sounds OK for spinning out, what group do you start in and what time are you aiming for?

DO iT!!

don't know the Argus route but I did '12&'13 94.7s on my "Fixie( didn't ride it fixed though :whistling: )

using a 44/18 ratio and had an awesome ride.

If time is not that important and you do not mind the bit extra spinning then a change to 36/18 or 38/19 might be good.

You could even go to 38/20, but be prepared to have a very very leisurely ride up till Smitswinkel. Overspinning on the first half of the route will take away any advantage the low gearing provides on the last hillier bit.

Are you planning to use slicks or knobblies? (I assume you are on an MTB)
