For out-of-towners, rather arrive at the beachfront early and park quite a distance away from the Suncoast / Moses Mabhida area. That area will obviously become chokka block on race day and difficult to get out.

It's a much better idea to park a few kays away (e.g. at Blue Lagoon in the north or Ushaka in the south) and then ride back to the car after the finish. The whole beachfront area is pancake-flat and lined with coffee shops and restaurants, so you can literally freewheel back to your car with a nice cup of Joe or ice cream in your hand after your race.

If you've got a missus/kids who want to see you at the finish, maybe budget for them to get rental bikes on the beachfront and they can cruise the beachfront with you after the race.

Weather is looking good for now

Ja, let's hope it keeps that way. The mid-range forecast shows a SW front arriving Sunday night / Monday morning. I just hope it doesn't arrive sooner than expected.

Looks like the weather is pushing further away each day. At this rate Sunday is going to be hot

??

Seen as online entries only closed on Sunday I'm sure the seeding will be done tomorrow or Thursday at the latest.

Lol, modern day technology, go figure.

Well Garmin Connect is close to Google Earth's 1241m.

Maybe someone who rode it last year can verify.

Stick with 600m elevation. This race is fast. The initial climb to the highest point in Pinetown is done in around 49min (30km into the race) by the better cyclists. From there it is hell for leather as the taps are opened up properly into an 11km mineshaft down the M19. Smooth road surfaces from Umgeni Bird park to the finish add to impressive cruising speed. Bunny hops over the traffic circles at La Mercy are common. If ever your average or PB need adjustment, this one will do it for you. Been there done that and will do it again and again. An adrenalin rush of note. Might even need Ritalin/Prozac to calm down afterwards. Good luck and enjoy.

Yes, I see that expected front is fizzling away. As the current forecast stands, we can expect a warm day and a NE wind that will get stronger as the day goes on.

So a headwind to the turnaround at Westbrook and then a nice tailwind home.

When I entered, I noticed the age categories were in 5 year splits (40-44 and 45-49) rather than the usual 10 year groups (40-49).

I've previously done this race twice - one year it was part of the Vet's Super Series and the following year it was back to the normal full strength 10 year age cats.

Might have something to do with the number of entries. I see this year they have increased the entries by 18% over last year and the late entries at the expo are still to come.

Either way, it's not going to be an easy day out.

I know my own strategy and must just stick to it - worked well both times I did the race before. Looking forward to it.

Pray tell.

Balls to the wall to Pinetown then just try to hang on to the finish?

Well, I just told you mine, now tell me yours.

Balls to the walls... Burning (as few) matches (as possible)... pretty much the same thing.

Stay as close to the front as possible for the first 30-odd Km can yield the results I'm hoping for. It's the bump just after Otto Volek on/off ramp that I'm hoping to burn as few of those matches as possible.
