The cyclist was an elderly man. He fainted while riding through Bakoven. He hit his head very hard and was bleeding badly. I managed to get him to keep still while I tried to stop the bleeding and call an ambulance.

Calling an ambulance was very difficult. It took about 10 minutes before i could speak to someone who was available was I was put on hold by 4 different people. Then it took another 18 minutes for the ambulance to arrive.

He was in shock and a few people helped.

NO cars were involved.

His first words were "how's my bike"

why can they not close that road to cyclists during working hours ? make it safer ?

*yes I know this bloke fainted*, but it just seems that some roads should not be sued during normal hours. Or is it to much to ask cyclists to obey the rules of the road and everything will settle down of world fun ride champs?

SlowB's I don't think you could even try and ask cyclists' not to use that stretch of road! Especially not this close to the Funride World Champs! Besides which it is one of the most spectacular stretches of road to cycle even if there was no shoulder, without the obvious comfort of safety in numbers from everyone who cycles this stretch. It has the highest traffic volume of cyclists using a road in the Western Cape!

The real issue at play here is the disregard of some motorists towards cyclists along this stretch. It's those select few who have no rational argument or reason other than to blindly and ignorantly state that cyclists have no place being on the road in any shape or form! But this is not unique to this area or city in our country...

Glad to hear the cyclist is OK.  His reaction about the bike earns him BIG points

Legbreaker, it was good of you to become involved.

10 minutes to get to the right people was too long

18 minutes for the ambulance wasn't too bad.

Personally, I now drive my car to just the other side of Bakoven and ride from there. Bakoven and Clifton has become too dangerous for my liking. Very early in the morning it is still OK, but when you come back a few hours later, it is a nightmare of wall to wall buses, taxis and cars all trying to take you out.

I kinda get confused to be honest. When I collected some goodies and had to drive back from camps bay to the waterfront it was madness with all those trucks and construction etc etc. Even in the car I was worried - would hate to be a cyclist on that road WHEN construction is happening and big trucks are moving around. Saturday's, sundays and public holidays are different stories.

When I typed my first response I was actually thinking of all that work at Muizenburg (especially the stop go section and you get stuck behind two or three cyclists) down to Fish Hoek and the terrible encounters I have had with cyclists on that road. Obviously two different parts of the planet...

Better to stay on Victoria Dr. through Bakoven than trying to bypass that section by going up Campsbay Dr and down Houghton St.which are narrow and very busy.

Just be very carefull.

Remember to think for the drivers as well.

Be carefull out there, rather be safe than sorry
