What is the engagement like, one of the most important things for me? What is the best value rear hub with good engagement, and not too noisy?

Here is the thing.  After the rim and spokes the hub is the least important component in the wheel.  Often the most expensive and most debated but as long as the flanges are strong enough to withstand the spoke tension for a long period without cracking or the shape distorting and the axle, freehub and bearings are suitable for the intended use just about any hub will do. For MTB Hopes are great.  Rapide are excellent value for money for the weight.  I build mostly on Hope and then Novatec for the more cost concious.  The Novatec D542SB has 6 pawls and the engagement is great.  Sounds cool as well - not as loud as the Hope but has a nice buzz to it.  If you want super engagement go Chris King or the like but expect to pay.

Sorry about the hijack but I have a noob question about free body compatability. I have 2 bikes. They are both about 6 or 7 years old. One of them is has a 12mm through axle rear hub (Sunringle) the engangement is quick and stiff and I just love the sound of those pawls. The other bike has the usual 9mm qr rear hub (Specialized OEM) but I think they are made by DT swiss. This one is not so quick and stiff at the one I mentioned before. The only thing common between them is that they are both 9speed. Is there any chance at all that I can simply swop the freebodies? Is it worth taking into an lbs to see if it can be done? Or can you tell me outright that it simply wont work. In which case where do I start looking for a freebody which is stiffer/quicker and by extension (loud and lovely)

No.  Not compatible at all.

David, you don't perhaps have an ABG freehub body for the D542SB Novatec hub? Mine is pretty much shot, so I'm keen to get the one with the steel inserts

Sorry, I don't.  You can try the guys at Evobikes or else you will have to get a shop to order in from the agent (Cape Cycles).
