Something else that bothers me - if you ride on rolling hills, the road is called undulating. Does that mean a flat road is dulating?

I saw an advert in Bicycling magazine the other day advertising helmets or something and it had this cool looking dude riding a Kuota but the brake caliper quick release was in the "up" position.

I thought to myself "At least get the technical bits right for the flippin advert!"

But 2 days later I saw a pic of Robbie Hunter riding Barloworlds Bianchi with the quick release in the up position!!!! WTF!?!?!?!?

Have I being doing it wrong all the time??? Surely it needs to be in the down position so that when you need to remove the wheel you can open the calipers??

Somebody please tell me...this is driving me nuts!?!?!

The quick release on a brake makes for a poor adjuster. The only adjuster you should use for the job of accommodating wider rims is the barrel adjuster. The QR on Shimano-type brakes works with a cam that is safest in the closed position. Campag brakes have a different system that works by opening the levers and they can safely be used in any position if your fingers are long enough.

Opening brake QRs is typically done when powerful riders ride on wheels with too few spokes. Then the wheels flex and touch the brakes on the most powerful part of your stroke. Campag solved this problem on the rear wheel by going back to single pivot brakes that have a smaller mechanical advantage but produces more travel for less hand movement. In short, single pivot brakes give you more gap between the rim and pad.

I've had some customers who even experience brake touch on their front wheels. Almost always these wheels are too flimsy.

In the case of Robbie Hunter I'd like to think he's too powerful for his brakes during the sprint. However, even pros forget to tighten QRs from time to time. Take your pick.

At my gym, right above the urinal, there's an advert for the gym showing as you put it, a cool looking dude with a great six-pack, floating on his back in the water. However, his swimming goggles are clearly upside down and not sealing.

Aaaah, JB, the voice of reason.

I never thought of wheel flex, thats fantastic reasoning!!! You've also just jogged my memory: While watching the TDF I remember Solier putting his quick release back after one of the monster climbs, just in case of brack block rub!!!!

Thanks JB, thats one i can tick off the list!
