Considering a homemade build

Burner

So this is my first topic...I've been toying with the idea to build my own frame and maybe some other custom bits. I've got experience in metal works, composites, plastics and product design....even built a variety of race cars from the ground up

Inspiration:

Trek, PYGA, Morewood and Momsen to mention a few

Reasons:

I like the challenge; I looooooove mtbiking; I have some tweaks I feel will make the manufacturers' above bikes suit my ride style a little bit more, like a custom fit (for my type of riding)........and I have some tooling that might help.

Let me just say that I love Trek bikes, their little details just make all the difference. Makes you feel like you're on a real special machine, almost boutique like. The abp system and the floating rear end really makes an accurate race bred feel when bombing down trails. PYGA and Morewood have taken some inspiration from these and Momsen has taken some brave leaps too. I love the fact that mtbiking has come to this stage where we have such a huge range of race bred machines to choose from, almost like looking at Lotus, Porsche, Ferrari, Koeniggsegg etc.

I will be posting my ideas, designs and progress in here. Feel free to comment, criticize and add suggestions.

Its either going to be a light weight all mountain or enduro trail bomber. I'm hoping to get it quite light but if that will prove to be hard then it will be built to be comfortable to ride all day and pedal well.

The frame materials I'm considering are carbon, steel and aluminium.

Cool, looking forward to seeing your concept sketches

I will definitely be following this topic.

I have been designing my ideal trail burner for a few weeks now.

Think Long, Low, Slack, Short Chain stays, Short Travel but built tough.

I found a website (www.cycle-frames.com) that looks as if it is the source of the Mercer framesets. At least it gives us access to proper tubing at the press of a button.

Popcornskollie, why do get the feeli g that bike is commi meta 5.5 inspired :)

O

Tubehunter, this will be an interesting process. Looking forward to your thoughts

Nolipoli, thanks for the link. Feel free to share ideas. I want this post to be an educational journey for all of us

PeterF, i agree with you ;) but i prefer slacker head angles. I'm not sure if it's down to individual riding style that makes different bikes perform better or worse but I'd like to investigate and explore that on this journey

Pulling your leg (although she is a nice ride).  Good luck with your project.

To be honest I haven't ridden one of those yet, I'd like to feel how well it compares to the trek's full floating rear end. I've only read good things about DW links.
