So insurance will not cover a 2nd hand car????

Had to only show proof of payment of the mtb and quotes of the replacement mtb

It's likely they would, if you scored a bargain on here and insured it you most likely insure for replacement value. Which is no different.

Yes! Send the specs of your current bike to a few bike shops and ask them to quote on a new replacement, up your insured amount to the most expensive reply..

.

I go back to my first post. I am very please that I am in a different risk pool to you.

I don't want to subsidise anybody who buys a 9 year old entry level 26" bike and 6 weeks later claims almost 3 times the purchase price and does not see that something is wrong.

Foil40, is that you ?

Do not forget to specify....thats where they get you.

What did you specify as the replacement value of your obsolete 9 year old entry level 26" bicycle you paid R3500 for 6 weeks earlier, and how did you get to that amount ?

It's how insurance works, replacement value. Sometimes it works for you sometimes against.

Are you in your own special risk pool that nobody else knows about?

As a family we look out for each other.

Every time an old, obsolete bicycle magically triples in value whilst standing in a garage for 6 weeks, it affects every one in the risk pool.

If you know anything about insurance, you will know that they work on replacement value not used cost price.

Their premiums are based on this. 5 years ago, I bought a used bike for R6 000. I was hit by a car and they paid me out R16 000. No, my bike did not magically increase in value and yes it was a discontinued model, which I guess makes it obsolete too. I paid premiums on replacement and they replaced it for me.

Going on the facts presented if the guy supplied the original purchase invoice of R3500 and bike make/model to the insurance co and they paid out R10k then I don't see the problem, insurance co's aren't fools, old trick trying to over value insured goods, they obviously believed R10k was a fair payout and he was paying a premium to support that. The guy looks to be new to bikes and may not have a good idea of their replacement value, the way bike brands do models/price points is pretty confusing. The theft being only weeks after the bike was purchased/bike cost R3500 purchased 2hd is inconsequential to the insurance co?

If the above isn't the actual story then that's a different matter.

No, I am in a high value pool with likeminded individuals.

My premiums are a fraction of what people on here have quoted as paying and my claims are settled instantaneously and in full.

I know EXACTLY how insurance works, from the inside. Thank you.

but if the shop dude said the bike is good enough for Meerendal and when OP takes it back and then get told it is only suitable for gravel roads, I'm sorry I got a problem with that. Then shop dude should have first up said stick to gravel roads.

Having said that, OP, do your homework regardless. When you upgrade, approach it as if you might not get all the information from a salesman.

I dare anyone to prove that an Axis A90 is not suitable for Meerendal.

What is Meerendal other than gravel roads and manicured singletrack (narrow gravel road). And how much of the singletrack and Dortsberg is a beginner going to attempt anyway?

Ask Gary Fisher or Tom Richey if their steel framed, rigid fork, down tube shifter ROAD bikes with wider tyres where not suited for gravel roads when they started taking their bikes off the tarmac??

Compared to what was considered a mountain bike a measly 20 years ago, an Axis A90 is a SUV!

Wanna bet that I can do todays Epic Prologue on an Axis A90? I am willing to bet I can. Will I like or enjoy it? Hell No!

Will it take me longer than anyone else today? Probably

Will I ever want to ride an A90 after that? Nope. But I will be able to do it.

And yes a saleman can not spoon feed every customer everything they know about cycling/bikes/equipment/nutrition/repairs/trails/races/etc in just 10 minutes.

It amazes me just how selective peoples memories can be from what they want to hear and what a salesman actually says to them.

We had a budget for her bike and said what we wanted to use the bike for. The budget did not make it to the "better bike" range and then he showed us the Axis.

So you, the one with the wallet, were showed the better bikes but ultimately made the decision, by yourself, that you wanted the cheaper bike and not the better bike?

They gave us now warranty booklet with the bike...wife is 50kg hahaha....just want all of your opinions before i bite someones head off.

Welcome to mtbking....its a sport we love, and surely, you will also come to love.....but she is a money hungry mistress, and will constantly suck you dry with little upgrades and fixes here and there. ...

Good luck...

Personally i dont willfully misdirected you, its more a miscommunication (as he would rather sell you more expensive bike)
