My freaken testicles are stil eina from yesturdays eenzaamheid trip. Ride along the railway line on kromme rhee.

Any tips on how make it more comfortable on a hardtail?

I fitted a Canondale SAVE seatpost which has a little give and it makes quite a difference. Not cheap, but even in hind sight I think it was a good buy. I can't comment on the scale of normal hard tail vs. full suspension as I have only done one parking lot test on a full suspension bike. The save seatpost take the bite out of the hard tail to the extend that I don't feel the need for a full sus frame anymore. And I end up spending a lot of time on district roads lately. I also recall an article where they reviewed multiple other options and the SAVE did not even come up as the best option. I can still recommend it though.

I started looking right next to the tar road - You'd be surprised how many options there are. This way I came up with a 75km route consisting of only 9km gravel where I end up with only half the distance on the tar.

Softer tires maybe? Or go for something like a thudbuster seatpost or similar.

Ill have a look into it! What did the seatpost set you back if I may ask?

Ill have to play around with pressures then.. Too soft and it feels like I'm not going anywhere, too hard = EINA! Ons sal op daai grond pad moet gaan speel

One of these days there will be less gravel roads that you can train on in that area...Slent, Waarburg and Sandringham due for upgrades to tar ;)

Would give me more options on my road bike   (and for all the local roadie races that all go on the same route through paardeberg...)

But I wonder why? None of them carries a lot of traffic afaik?

It is the cost of the maintenance that is the driving factor behind the upgrade. Due to all the trucks that utilize the gravel roads, the city can't keep up with maintenance. And finding suitable material for a gravel road is a issue due to the environmental concerns.

hmm, a pity for MTB and a plus for road bike.

Waarburg, like in the current tar road West of the R304 to Joostenbergvlakte, or the gravel road East of the R304 to Klapmuts?

How is the safety on Sandringham? - I'm to afraid to go trough there with my car to check it out.

As far as I understand both sections east and west of the R304 will be upgraded

I have cycled along Sandringham on many occassions without any incidents...but maybe I was just lucky  Just keep the speed high and have your racing face on and they will leave you alone
