I pumped my 28mm tandem tyres to 110PSI in a state of absent mindedness. The difference versus the normal 95PSI was unbelievable. Every little bump was transferred, bike was skittish and so uncomfortable. Next ride back to correct pressure was like a couch by comparison.

You also need to check the maximum tyre size that your wheel can handle. Modern rims can generally handle bigger tyres but everything has a design limit.

all correct however a point I recall reading is that a 25mm tyre pumped up to the same pressure as a 23 tyre will actually have less resistance as the contact patch is smaller. while the contact patch would be wider it would be less long (my phrase) thus resulting in a smaller area in contact with the road.

There is of course a penalty to pay as the tyre will weigh more.

Quick question.  I'm trying to compare the profile of the new IM 42km run to other runs I've done in training.  The new route profile says 75m of climbing.  I know it's a 10km lap.  Does anyone know: Is the run climbing 75m for the 10km lap or 75m for the full 42km?  Maybe I'm doff.  Thanks

Again I don't know for sure as I think the elevation figures for both the run and cycle seem a little "strange" when I look at my 2015 figures.

One lap of the run course will definitely not give you 75 metres of elevation I am absolutely positive of that but I reckon 4 laps will probably be more than 75. Last year my watch battery died at 15 km into the run and that yielded 55 metres if of elevation and the old lap had way more elevation than the new.

Hopefully someone cleverer than I can shed more light on this.

75m for the whole 42km sounds right.

Flat beachfront road. You still go up the hill next to the university but then turn and come back. Otherwise the total climb would be 10m.

That's good news.  They say it is a fast and flat course so 75m is virtually pan flat.  Put into perspective the Durbs 70.3 half marathon was 132m according to my Garmin.  Thanks Gents, good luck with the training...

Thanks man...must say I am mightily happy with my training this year. I am doing around 20% more training than last year and my body is bouncing back from hard sessions much quicker. I am also faster at cycling and marginally faster running, slightly slower in swimming but to be expected as I come from a swimming background and did far too much swimming for 2015 training.

I am also beginning to get a grasp of what nutrition to use building up and during a race so building up a little experience.

REally look forward to PE ...

I am in the unknown with my training.  Done a few good sessions but mostly maintaining.  Some sessions are really hard and I suffer and feel flat but then I get sessions that I feel super strong.  Triathlon is such a confidence sport.  I need to get my act together for the next 8 weeks or so....

^_^ Welcome to my world.

Still carrying 8 extra kgs from my research into how much red wine one middle-aged man can consume in one winter season. Last year end Jan I was on IM distances (28km run). This year will be lucky if I make it by end Feb. I tell myself that I don't want to peak too soon...

Same feeling as you: one good session, next one feeling like a water-filled balloon rolling down the road.

I am also on this not peaking to soon strategy. training consistently but not getting in enough lsd runs or bikes with this heat we were having.at least I had my first 15 km run which felt easy enough on sunday after a 100km plus ride and brick session on Saturday.

at least I to the plunge and entered and paid for the event on Friday so no backing out now.to everyone out there stay safe and keep on swimming peddling and running.

I sort of hope that the training I did and the 3 x 70.3 races I did last year together with a 70.3 distance 4 weeks ago would be the base.no just to add distance to the bike and run.

10 weeks to go basically. 8 weeks of serious training. January for me was a huge month, biggest ever to date so all looking good. Did more running than any other month ever and Feb will focus on the cycling ...

P1529 is in serious jeopardy of being beaten

Exactly 60 days to go.... an counting.

How is everyone's training coming along?

Struggling with a nagging achiles tendon, so gonna give it some rest and hope for the best. Was gonna spend some more time on the bike in Feb in any event. Oh well, what's IM training without the injuries and snotty noses? :D
