Good day

Not sure if this is posted in the correct section, admins are more than welcome to move if they want to.

I want to buy a MTB new or secondhand but I have no idea of the specs I need to look for, any help would be appreciated or some nice deals which you are aware of.

Some details:

Height - 1.9m

Weight - 110Kg

Budget - R10,000

Purpose - Off road trails (not competitions etc.)

Any help with frame size, rim size and shocks would be great.

Regards

When I started, I weighed almost the same as you but I'm only 1.8m tall.

I started with a small R2000 Raleigh 26er bike from Game and the going was tough!

I upgraded to a large Specialized Rockhopper 29er a few months ago (2nd hand for R6200 on The Hub) and although I'm greatful for starting on a heavy (19 kg) Raleigh bike because I'm stronger now, the light (12 kg) Specialized is a much more comfortable ride!

My suggestion would definately be a descent, large frame 29er, 2nd hand because you can get a lot more for your R10000 and there are some nice, well looked after bikes out there.

I recently sold my golf clubs to upgrade the old coil fork to a new Rockshox 30 Gold air suspension fork and over the past few weeks I've bought 10 speed parts on The Hub from different guys and upgraded from 9 speed to 10 speed this weekend.

My suggestion would be go for an air fork straight away - Rockshox XC32 would be your best bet for your budget.

Whether you go for Shimano or Sram parts is up to you but if you go Shimano, try get Deore or better and if you go for Sram, try go for X5 or better.

Anyway, that's my 5c worth.

I hope it helps... :)

I picked up a Titan Comp 29er from Cajees 3 weeks ago. Rockshox air suspension, Shimano Deore and 10 speed. R10,400. Very happy with this bike.

I am not experienced though so don't have a reference base to the more hardcore bikes, but I'm happy.

At 1.9m I'd think you'd be better off on an XL but if you go to the manufacturers website they should give size vs height tables. I'm 1.87 and am really happy with XL

Youre a big oke, get a 29er with a really strong wheelset. Only then worry about the fork although preferably air from the start as the others said. All frames of new bikes in your price range are similar. Focus on getting the right size. Sizing differs between manufacturers. XL in one might be L in another.
