Paarl Taalmonument

Hi guys

Please note that the tracks below Taalmonument in Paarl are Pay-to-ride trails.

Day permits cost R25 and can be obtained from security at the entrance to Taalmonument.  However, I discussed this with management at TM and pointed out that for locals this becomes a bit impractical because often these trails are a part of a bigger ride and are merely a quick pass-through en route elsewhere.

TM has therefore now introduced a year permit which will cost R220 per annum.  It can be obtained either from the Visitor Centre at Taalmonument or by e-mailing Natasha-Lee October at admin@taalmonument.co.za.

TM management are going to start enforcing their landrights far more seriously from now on, and if rogue riding continues they will consider talking to AMA Rider and PPA to see what steps can be taken against such riders.  Obviously the SAPS will also be called since it is trespassing on State Land.

Please get behind this, since a big chunk of the funds will be made available for trail maintenance and possibly long term expansion.

Taalmonument want to give back to the riders, but they cannot do so on their dime and they also need to manage the land usage properly, so riding has to become formalised asap.

Again, I implore you to respect this.  For once we have a state entity that is going out of its way to make riding on their land possible.  Let's show them that we are worth the investment.

Cheers.

I wasnt even aware of this. Thanks for the update.

No worries.  It's been one of the worst enforced arrangements ever, but they want to get things sorted out now.

I posted on PaarlMTB as well, but I'd appreciate it if you could spread the word amongst your riding mates.

Cheers

Hi Nico, is this the "Bo Bos" area above and below the u-shaped tar road going up to the taal monument?

Yip.  There is a little trail network in the "Onder Bos" that is also going to grow a bit come the rainy months, but that is not Taalmonument related.  However, it all creates a rather nice little "trail park" with the 5 gravity lines and then the little XC loop that is going to be expanded.

So on the one side of the mountain we have the Taalmonument and "Bos/Koffiedam" trails and then on the other side the Rhebokskloof network.  I also heard rumours about some more trails coming in the middle of the mountain from some new restaurant developments, so combined with the Reserve (only dirt roads, but stunning scenery) Paarl Mountain is turning into a little MTB paradise with something for everyone.

This is what I reckon a MTB riding destination should be anyways.  Something to keep mom and the kids happy, something to keep the DH'ers happy, something for the trail bikes and then something for the long roaders.

In a year's time I reckon Paarl Mountain will be one of the top spots to go and ride your bike regardless of what bike that is.

Great news man. Made my Monday more bearable. Thanks

This may be a stupid suggestion and I will most likely get flamed for this. But can't you guys in the area talk to each other and all get together for one annual permit deal?!

I mean, the guys from way out in D'ville can ride in Welvanpas as part of their annual fee... Yet here we are, having to pay separate fees for both sides of the mountain and then still another fee for Welvanpas as well? How is it going to be enforced - a 3rd bordjie on the bike/body (fortunately RBK is lenient there and you can put the thing in your pocket/hydration pack)?

Going for a day ride in e.g. Jonkers or wherever is a different story and I have no issues paying a another fee/annual permit for out-of-town stuff. It's just mind-boggling that we stay in one town and have to pay for 3 (local) annual permits, two of which is on the same mountain, esp with further expansions planned.

And really Nico, I appreciate the efforts (even though being from other side of town and not riding there much). It's always good to hear about more trails and better maintenance.

I will spread the word and make my buddies aware of the permit requirements for Bo-Bos, the downhill run to the left (ending in Bo-Bos) and parking area, if I understand the areas correctly.
