What's the benefit of that type of drivetrain?

Edit: Lower center of gravity, maybe?

To make use of a geared hub, without putting the heavy thing in the back wheel.

I just realized how subjective this thread is.

To me there are several bikes I deem beautiful objects which aren't in anyway porn worthy

thats whats so nice about it, to see peoples different tastes, theres no right or wrong answer!

that being said, this YT tues cf should be on everyones list of good looking bikes!

10 Reasons to Love the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 http://www.cyclemonkey.com/images/spacer.gif

The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 is a 14-speed internal gear hub offering a 526% gear ratio, comparable to that of a typical mountain bike derailleur system. For most applications, a single front chainring is sufficient to provide all the gear ratios that a rider desires. Shifting is accomplished by rotating a twist shifter mounted on the handlebar. Like other internal gear hubs, gear ratio changes occur inside the hub. The chain does not have to move between sprockets, improving shifting reliability and allowing shifts to be made without pedaling.

We are huge fans of the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 here at Cycle Monkey. We use them exclusively for mountain biking, commuting, and often for road riding because the hubs work so well. They are great when the riding conditions are good and even better when they are not. Here's a quick list of what we love best:

  1. The 526% gear range provides plenty of gears to get up, over, around, and down all kinds of terrain.
  2. The hubs require very little maintenance and offer unmatched reliability.
  3. The dual cable system means one cable is always pulling the hub into its next gear, so there is no dependence on a spring for making a shift in either direction.
  4. Indexing occurs in the hub, so there is no cable adjustment required between the hub and shifter, and no tuning of the shifting system is needed.
  5. Gears can be changed at any time, whether you're pedaling or not. This offers numerous advantages—from tackling technical singletrack more easily and keeping a more constant cadence, to being able to easily select a lower gear to start from a standstill on the road or trail.
  6. You always have a perfect chainline between the front chainring and rear sprocket, and the chain doesn't need to move laterally as it does in derailleur systems. This results in noticeably longer chain life and virtually eliminates broken chains.
  7. The SPEEDHUB 500/14 has comparable efficiency to a perfectly clean derailleur system and bests derailleurs when things get muddy and gritty.
  8. The SPEEDHUB 500/14 reduces the complexity of recumbent drivetrains.
  9. On recumbents, folding bikes, and other small wheeled bikes on which the rear derailleur is often only only an inch or two above the ground, the SPEEDHUB 500/14 improves ground clearance and reduces the chances of costly damage.
  10. The SPEEDHUB 500/14 prolongs battery life and increases the range of e-bikes.

The SPEEDHUB 500/14's internal components are well sealed from the environment, offering dramatic improvements in durability and reliability compared to derailleur systems. Unlike other internal gear hubs, the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 offers better efficiency, unmatched reliability, wider gear range, and higher load ratings. For example, it's rated for tandems, aggressive off-road riding, loaded touring, and e-bikes; the new36-hole version is ideally suited to these applications. The SPEEDHUB 500/14 is also the only gear hub available with a quick-release axle.
