i have a 2014 Silverback Sola 4. I would like to know if I can do a straight tubeless conversion on my standard rims.

The specs are as follows:

Rims:Alex Disk 29", Alloy Double Wall, 32H, Steel eylets

Tyres: Maxxis Sphinx, 29" x 2.1, 27TPI

(and yes I used a cheat sheet for the specs :) )

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

the reason why I ask is that my re-seller told me that it is not possible to do tubeless conversion on my rims. that is why I am asking. I think he is trying to make a quick buck of a newbie. I quite like my tires, they offer good grip and are easy rolling so I don't need to work too hard to keep the wheels turning.

any suggestions for a good tire sealant?

The rims you can tape up with Gorilla tape. Are the tyres foldable or do they have a wire bead? If they have a wire bead you will need new tyres.

not true, I have had many wire bead tubeless conversions

Like Dillon said , it can be done . You can make your wheelbarrow or Granma's walker tubeless if you want to . But some conversions will take you 1 beer while others might take you 12 beers . There are a lot of stories around about tires climbing of the rim because they tubeless and ran at low pressure . I suppose it can happen if you don't do the conversion properly but once the bond between the tire and rim has been formed with the tire sealant then I cannot see that tire just coming off .

Speaking of tyres.

Shouldn't the tyres be at least tubeless ready? Because of not sealing and leaking at the sidewalls? You will in the end need a lot more sealant just to seal if it will seal at all.

I have learned that you can go tubeless on any rim and any wheel of decent-ish quality. Did a 100% fully functioning tubeless conversion on a standard dual-sus Raleigh for their son, with the standard rim just got him cheap new tires.

Yup, for example the Schwalbe non-snakeskin is a mission to seal with sidewall leaks everywhere, where the snakeskin ones are 100% tubeless and seals easy.

haha I believe if beers start getting involved I would eventually sit with a lot of spares afterwards haha. but knowing my luck the wheels will then be tubeless, rimless and bikeless

from experience, use proper tubeless tyres, tubeless ready and cheaper tyres have thin sidewalls and some tyres have a thin tread area.  So cuts in the tyres are going to be a problem if you are riding rocky off road.

If you are riding road, dirt roads, manicured paths then don't worry use what you have.
