This was my understanding too.

All this time I was pissed off at Pyga.

4 bar? Am I really so doff that I can't see the difference?

Someone please enlighten me.

Trek pivot on the triangle is ON the axle, which makes it a split pivot. 4 bar is when the rear pivot is anywhere on the chain Or seat stay...

pyga, trek or slider1, if you look at the retail of the slider at 34K, and then consider second hand, does that buy "more bike" or just more "race" bike?

Posted

what other 650B bike are there that I could look at in the second hand market ?

Or is the uptake of the 650b market to small to get a second hand one and a new (or demo) bike is on the cards?

The slider 1 is a killer deal and one great riding bike. .......Did a review somewhere here on the hub, just can't seem to find the link on my cell.

I echo the prev statements made re a bike with good geo

What about the anthem with the 120mm front fork?

Indeed, for Wine2Whales and Sani2C etc, that would be ideal.

If your Misses plans on leaving the ground, flying off drop-offs and carving and thrashing single track hard, go for the Pyga or the Trek. If she is more inclined to cruise jeep-track etc, the Giant is more than fine and half the price.

will the anthem give her the same measure of confidence that the bike can make up for her lack in skill ?

Go get her to ride them all - hopefully the shops set each of the bikes up properly as this is what I find works to sell bikes. She doesn't care about split, floating pivots, 4 bar linkages et al. Let her pick the one that feels best to her and comes in the colour she likes. Bike buying is an emotional choice.

Good luck!

-1 Trek...had one, broke one. I am not entirely convince the ABP design, tubesets and materials used marry that lekker...cracked mine on chainstay in an obvious stress point. Might have just been a Friday frame, but if I compare the thickness and tube design on the pyga vs the trek I had, it was clear which one was going to fail first due to fatigue

Sure, I had the Anthem 29er and it flies over the rough stuff.

The Pyga and Trek are great bikes but more made for Enduro types that are going to ride hard and don't mind carrying a bit more weight etc.

The Giant (or similar) is a lot cheaper but also more light weight and suited to marathon / jeep track type riding.

My wife ride a 2011 Trek Fuel EX9 26" and she is very happy and comfortable on the bike - riding mostly Bottelary Hills but also did Berg&Bush last year. I am also looking at alternatives with similar requirements. The more I look, the more I realise what she has is actually very good. One of the main reasons to change is the weight of the bike as she is only 48kg. That Trek sounds like a very good deal to me, but I would guess any would do.

If you're looking for a demo bike, Avron from Cycle Traders in Woodstock has a GT Sensor Carbon Pro. Medium size, I think he wants R 36k. Really nice bike, I just bought the Sensor Elite and am very happy.

Good trail bike and climbs like a goat.

Not necessarily, Terry. Anthem's head angle is a whole load steeper than the Trek / Pyga / Silverback / Trance, which means that she's probably going to feel more "over the front" as a newbie / inexperienced rider. I really, really think that something with a head angle in the 66-68 degree range, and with slightly more travel than the Anthem and with a short stem, will be her best bet. It'll just inspire more confidence in the technical stuff.

Regarding the weight - your option of the Trek is already lighter than the Anthem would be, as well as the Silverback. IMO the giant that you should be looking at is either the Anthem SX (which has a slightly slacker head angle thanks to the longer fork) or the Trance 650. Forget about the suspension designs for a moment, as they're all very good.

That Sensor Pro posted above is also a good option. Slacker than your out and out XC bikes, and enough of a trail bike to make her feel a bit more confident.

In the end though - from those bikes you've shortlisted - the Pyga / Trek / Silverback - there's no one bad option. The Trek WILL be the lightest, the PYGA will be the most expensive, and the Silverback will offer the best bang for buck - BUT - you need to let her try them out and see which one she connects with. None of them will be a bad choice.

El Cap, ok, so as I said before, if you take a price of R30k, is it even worth looking at the second hand market given the requirements ? (Not alot of 650b's on option).

Yeah, for sure it is. Take the new Trance for example. 26k for a fully kitted bike, and as soon as you convert it to tubeless you've got a reasonably light, but EXTREMELY capable bike within your budget. Lighten up the wheels (cos they are heavyish) and you can go down even further on the weight scale. Plus it can take on everything - multi day stage races, XC events, everything - and the frame is LIGHT - so you can upgrade the heavier parts over time, if you really want to go weight weenie.

Then there's the Silverback, which comes in at the same sorta price as the trance (may be a bit more expensive)

You can get a 2nd hand trance / Pyga / Silverback within your budget of 30k with ease. They are available if you're prepared to wait a bit (I know you are)
