Front shock or not?

Your frame is to small in my opinion. Should rather be on a 19 inch which would bring your center of gravity further back as the handle bars should now be higher and further away from you.

Ek is jammer, maar 'n Rigid fork gaan nie jou OTB probleem op los nie. Jou fiets is te klein. En as jy OTB gaan op tegniese dele mag dalk 'n Rider error wees voor dit die fiets se skuld is. Skuif jou gewig agter toe as dit rof raak.

Ja Louis, can only agree with those who say go Large (19"). I am 178cm, 72kg and was convinced a Medium would be fine. During fitting it became clear that a Large would be better; the Medium seat post was near max. My feeling was that if your seat is significantly higher than the handlebars, OTB is easier (happens quickly); except when you impact of course.

Hey Louis.

As mentioned by the other guys I also suggest a bigger frame coupled with shorter stem.

If the frame has 30mm longer top tube then you can run a 30mm shorter stem & it will have the same cockpit feel as your current setup.

For every 20mm you go wider on the handlebars you can go 10mm shorter on the stem.

Also remember to never go slower than a fast-ish walking pace or your front wheel will "lock" very easy & you'll be out the front door.

Momentum is your friend (when it gets rougher)

I know it takes time to build the confidence when you have had a couple over the bars moments, but hang in there!

Suspension really makes riding a pleasure.

Just a side note: What model is your fork?

You might be able to extend the travel to 120mm which will also lift the front end a bit.

Louis, some observations on reading the string:

1.) If you have back problems maybe a hard tail and rigid setup is not for you - I would suggest going full suspension as the ride is a lot softer. It may solve ytour back problems which will also then allow you to setup the bike better and solve some of your other issues. Compromises in setup lead to other issues.

2.) If you are going OTB then it sounds like you have a fork setup or a skills problem - but going rigid is extreme. Cure the causes not the symptoms.

3.) I am also 180cm is an in between height and really difficult to get to a good fit.  YOU fit a large and a medium as well. Thing is a large feels like its too long on the top tube and is taking me for a rider, whereas a medium you are fully extended on the seat posts etc. I prefer a medium as I can ride the bike better and get over the front or back - which is what you may need to do if you are going OTB.
