I have the Garmin fenix 3.

I have had the 910XT and the fenix 2 and all are really lekker devices with loads of functions in all. The only reason I changed from 910XT to f2 was that i was looking for a watch that I could wear daily as well. The change from f2 to f3 was partially the additional features and partly because it looks so much better than the f2. I would have bought the 920XT if it wasn't for the daily use requirement as the neither color scheme on the 920XT appeal to me!

Problem with that is, I'm not sure i want to take it on a trail run or any other adventure race like I did with the f2 incase it gets scratched. The f2 was plastic all over and the odd bump etc. didn't show up that much. The bezzle on the f2 is metal (it serves as a GPS antenna as well) so I think the scratches will show up much more!

Go to www.dcrainmaker.com

He's got a full comparison toll there which should help your decision, there are also more unit than just Polar and Garmin there, so it's quite comprehensive.

Yes, sad but true, the era of Polar 720 and 725 is now over, RIP. Polar and the local agents no longer keep spares for them. Mine has over 100 000 riding km on it, and no dramas apart from one new motherboard and new batteries annually since 2005! The Land Cruiser of training watches! Thanks for all the comments. Does this Polar Fenix 3 have the functionality to upload tracks, as required for Sani etc? Can you then follow a breadcrumb route like a Garmin 510 or 801?

Yes it can and much more

Yes - Max time is 20 hrs and min time is 16 hrs...

Max time can increase depending on which setting you have it on your gps

My trusty old Polar 725i has finally died and the agents no longer repair them... Time for a technology catch-up to the GPS era.

Which GPS sports watch is best suited to multisport activity:

• I do MTB, surfski, gym and swimming.

• Like to keep records of hours/week and calories/week on my laptop. Not interested in Bluetooth connectivity to mobile phone etc.

• Needs the right tracking functionality for multi-stage MTB races with routes, like Sani2c and Dusi2c.

• Also needs to have a decent battery life.

Appreciate your opinions, thanks.

I think you need to work backwards. find what will work for sani2c tracking and then pick one out of that. there will be a lot of good watches that will tick all the boxes but the nav will be a little bit iffy(if at all).

alternatively, get the watch you want. and get a dedicated bryton mounted on your handlebar for stage races. you'll find the nav function is probably better than a fenix3, and both devices will cost you less in total.

Thinking of selling forerunner 305 & 510 and invest in F3

That is exactly what i did.  Sold all of my devices i had for every activity and bought the F3 to use for everything.  I am very happy thus far and do not have any complaints.  There has been minor complaints on the gps and altimeter that ive seen, but in my experience its people that did not set up their gps correctly and you also need to realise the limitations of a altimeter with watches in general.

i love my watch and i am busy trying to write a few of my own apps (which is a big plus in my opinion)

for those that wish to compare 920xt to fenix 3

(although that fenix saphire looks gorgeous)

Did you pull that form DCRainmaker?

I have a Suunto Ambit

The external apps are awesome

Moves count is handy

Positive side is the local support turnaround is excellent

I ordered my f3 Sapphire from Clever Training in the US. The thing went pear shaped and was swapped out locally for a new unit with no questions asked. Garmin was not concerned with the origin of the unit at all. Their service and backup is awesome!

If you want basic (breadcrumb) tracking you can go for a a Garmin 910XT (even 310, but I wouldn't trust the battery of 3 year or older watches) or a Suunto Ambit 2 - both go for about R3k in the classifieds, can be used for multisport (Including Surfski, MTBing, gym and swimming). Both Garmin and Suunto have excellent and detailed websites for keeping logs.

The Fenix 2 is also nice, bit still a bit more expensive (around R4k usually) and IMO the screen isn't that nice for route tracking (dark/inverted colours, lower response rate) compared to the Ambit and 910XT.

But if you want to be one of the cool kidz buy the Fenix 3.

The Ambit is also very tough, I've bailed off my MTB and exposed mine to serious abuse and it's still going strong.

Even better now that movescount syncs with Strava.
