Patchelicious Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Is your buddy ok in the head?? I'd be in intensive care after day two.....I must say that I am super jealous of him, but also not. I am SOOO doing it next year: Cent Cols Challenge100 cols in 10 daysCreated and run in association with endurance rider Phil Deeker, the Cent Cols Challenge sees riders average 200km daily, with approximately 4,500m of climbing each day. Held variously in the Alps, Pyrenees, Cantabrico and Corsica, each Challenge combines routes and climbs from the grand tours with lesser-known gems to deliver an incredibly tough but unforgettable experience http://pages.rapha.cc/travel/cent-cols-challenge

Shebeen Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Definitely worthy of a repost http://www.letour.fr/PHOTOS/VUE/2015/1100/PROFIL.pngand in numbers, it's 111021...looks like you're dialling the flying squad
Shebeen Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 This is such an impossible stage that the main GC guys will just sit in until the final section of the final climb. It will be suicide to do anything else. So I don't see any fireworks from them until the final few kays to the line. They will have their whole teams looking after them the whole way because of the risk of big time losses due to mechanical/crash/bonk. Ja, but...if everyone just sits back then the chances are the main gc okes will be able to control things till the end. so someone like majka, rodriguez or even possovivo could take a gamble on a stage like today. blow things up early and see what happens. if it comes off, it comes off - if not then you have maybe lost your chance at a top10. risk and reward. (this is also obviously me hoping for something a bit more exciting than what you proposed)
Patchelicious Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 This type of stage is why guys dope... there I said it.
Gen Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 I reckon europe car/IAM and Lotto Jumbo want a win today..

Go for it!!!! One day I will ride in the Alps...bucket list thing. PS. Still think you need a quick visit to the shrink
tombeej Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Ja, but...if everyone just sits back then the chances are the main gc okes will be able to control things till the end. so someone like majka, rodriguez or even possovivo could take a gamble on a stage like today. blow things up early and see what happens. if it comes off, it comes off - if not then you have maybe lost your chance at a top10. risk and reward. (this is also obviously me hoping for something a bit more exciting than what you proposed) Unfortunately that's what happens with these huge stages that organisers conjure up. Sounds incredible to us fans and we get all excited about the big day. But in my experience these types of stages end up pretty uneventful except for the unknown little climber who stays away in the break of the day and earns his 15 minutes of fame while everyone else hunkers down and tries to get through the stage in 1 piece. These huge stages effectively get self-neutralised. The riders change their mindset from 'racing' to 'survival'. It becomes a mid-tempo procession of the big teams cruising to the final climb and minimising any risk. On a huge stage the GC guys know if they attack early they'll blow and the other teams who are still tapping out a rhythm according to their power meters will come trundling past soon enough. It's suicidal to try anything early - the only thing to do is keep the powder dry for one big attack that must count in the last few kays. I'm normally wrong, but that's how I've seen these types of days play out time after time. The best and most exciting stages are the ones that look more like a Classics stage: no huge climbs, rolling terrain, a number of teams who think they're in it to win it, so everyone goes full gas and attacks come from everywhere. That last stage where Dumoulin won was brilliant. In the last 10 kays there was attack after attack. Everyone was having a go. Same with the first week of the TDF. ASO got the format spot on this year. The Vuelta organisers can learn something from them.
tombeej Posted September 2, 2015 Posted September 2, 2015 Froome crashed in the neutralised section. One of my pics for the breakaway, Joe Dombrowski (Cannondale-Garmin), was in the crash as well. Things were pretty frenetic on that first climb as those keen to get into the break were burning all sorts of matches to get away. Looks like about 12 are starting to get a gap. Once the break has formed, things will settle down.
