Switching to compact crank

Was wondering if, front derailleur aside, it was a simple 'swap' switching from 53 to a compact.

Also are there issues with 9 speed and 10 speed compatability?

Its a simple swap, just your ratios change, and probably shorten your chain a couple of links. Even the front derailleur is not as critical as you think, i ran a regular front der without problems until my compact one arrived.

There shouldn't bee any problems between 9and10 speed, your front derailler will have to be adjusted (height on post changes). The only issue that sometimes surfaces is if your chosen compact BB is compatible with your bike (Italian or British treaded), have your compact installed by a good bike shop mechanic - Compact is great and made a big improvement to my cycling - one of the best things I've ever done for my bike

Different crank with smaller chain wheels.

 

Normal ratios are 53 and 39, compact are 50 and 34 (normally).

 

The effect is to give easier easier gears for climbing etc. but at the expense of top end speed.

Hi Slowbee,

 

This is a crank where the chainrings have less teeth than the standard cranks. On a road bike you basically get 3 types of cranks:

 

Triple with ratios of 52/42/30

Standard with 52/39 or sometimes 53/39

and compact with 50/34

 

The compact you'll see have a smaller Big and Small chainring than your standard. People use a compact in place of a triple to save a bit of weight but still have a better climbing ability.
