Not the first time I hear people using Game. It's a good isotonic drink. Better than Energade or Powerade in my opinion.

The reason I dropped Energade was that it's not a brilliant isotonic and I need the salts as I am prone to cramping.

Apple juice and water? Reminds me of the tales that one of my cycling elders tells. There weren't supliments then like there are now so they used to mix their own.

im the importer of enervit' date='we used to bring the product in at an exchange rate of 9 it is now 12 something, plus import duties,i can assure you that our mark ups are low,the retailers make the money, we are thinking of an online shop ....[/quote']

The exchange rate I can understand. But that should only effect the prices by 10 or 20 rand.

With regards to an online shop. Distribution is the biggest headache for those ventures. But there is such a shop already. Got a flyer at some race, but forgot the URL. If anyone know which site I'm on about, post it here.

1 litre apple juice added to 2 liters of water, add one cal-c-vita everesent tablet and 40 ml Weleda Blackcurrent tonic (available at most pharmacies and Pick a Pay's).  If you want you can add a packet of Rehydrate to the mixture, I however don't.

This was given to my wife by a dietician when she went for advice during her first pregnancy.  This was a good drink to replace the minerals and energy those little babies suck out of mom during the pregnancy and afterwards when breast feeding.  I decided that if it is good for the mrs then it is good for me.  Use it full on during training.

Also for a bit of change and for races I used Energy Dynamics and am very happy with it.

I am not convinced that all the

ingredients and amounts stated by the suppliers on their labels are

actually in the energy drink. I don't think ?nutritional

supplements?are evaluated by our food and drug

people/administration/authorities?

Maybe we can get M-NET's Carte Blanche

team to do a couple of lab tests for us on the top brands:

USN,Energy

dynamics,Energade,Cytomax,EAS,Evox,Biogen ?

I've been using Game for years for virtually all my training. I'm a cynical consumer and some time ago I decided to test it. I rode drinking only water until I hit the wall, then got the Game bottle from my seconder and felt fixed up almost immediately. I was sold. Now for a couple of weeks before a race I use FIT Carbo Train, recover with FIT Dura Train, and race with FIT Carbo Supreme. This stuff also works, but is expensive. Don't waste money on the expensive stuff for training. Game was good enough for thousands of Comrades runners for years, and it is good enough for us- seriously! Pick'nPay carries the big tins.

Mmmmhh...that is not the first time I heard about the apple juice and water mix as an energy drink. How/Why does this work? Any further info in this regard would be appreciated.

You can get Refuel - from Ian Rodgers in Cape Town

When I used to train at Bike max they had it on tap

Never stopped using it . Works for me. 4kg last about 3 1/2 months

Ive always used Isostar when racing, even on longer rides.  Its not as strong (sweet) as energade.  Ive heard good things abt Cytomax, think i will pass Diskem and check what they have available.

Interesting how little science filters onto these type of discussions and how little motivation stands behind various claims. But the last thing I want to do is step on anybodies toes or get flamed.  <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

This is my understanding of things from doing light research on the topic of nutrition in prep for the Epic:

Muscles burns carbs as fuel, so to keep going you need cards. The electrolyte balance is also important as it regulates muscle and other functions. Hydration is another biggie. Thus to keep going you need to meet these simple requirements.

If your glycogen stores are topped up you'll be OK to train hard for about  1h to 1.5h. On 2 hour training rides water is ok for me but I follow a high carb diet. On the second to third consecutive ride I start hitting the wall hammering back from Jonkershoek to Stellenbosch.

For longer rides the ball park figure is 60-90g carbs per hour. Add some salt for electrolytes and you're a for away. So to me it is simply a matter of getting the most carbs for your buck. There is very little accepted science about the other magic ingredients that enjoy most of the advertising space on the "high tech" products.

So as with the Transbaviaans, the Epic will be fueled by AJ muti MIX from Knersis.

Agree chickenrun4me. What I do want to add is that those of us who are not all that knowledgeable should spare a few randts and see a dietician.

While my son is only 2, we did that and it has made a massive difference. He has all the energy in the world and proudly did close to 4km on his Y-bike the other day. Next morning is was ready for another round.

Both my wife and I have appointments (only problem is the good guys are in such demand - 3mths waiting for my sons dietician).

Why do cyclists so easily buy into this "It's expensive, therefore it must be good" cr@p. All your energy drinks out there contain varying amounts of the salt, maltodextrin, fructose and or glucose. All available for around R 40.00 per KG (which goes a long way). A awesome recipe is found here: https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=40669&KW=Asker

This also happens to be the basis of Knersis AJ mix. I know a number of riders (including race snakes) who have switched from well know branded products to the AJ mix and swear by it.

If you want to customise the mixture with protein / peptides (very bitter) / potasium / magnesium etc it is easily and cheaply done.

The ingrediants are available in small quantities in both the Western Cape (from Knersis) and Gauteng from me.

The AJ muti formula makes a couple of litres. Say i only use 1 bottle on my training ride i will obviously have a bit left. How long can i keep this mixture in the fridge before tossing it?
