my partner was 19 when he did the epic,I was 20, his body took some huge shots, and he has never ridden since, heard the other day that he sold the mtb. Honestly, most young guys think they can do it, but it is so easy to over estimate your abilities, and picking up over use injuries is way more prevalent in young guys. It's also why so many young guys just burn out.

But I do agree, young bodies need to be conditioned before riding the epic. I suppose if all they do is cycle it wouldnt do that much harm, but it would still hurt them in the long run. The young roadies such as kingjried i think could manage, just need to wait a year or two

Ha ha, Eric will love that one, but he's been round the block a few more times than a 19 year old, he's 25 if I remember correctly.  Eric correct me if I'm wrong.

But my opinion is that while there are certainly youngsters who can complete the Epic comfortably they mustn't rush into it.  Rather work on the shorter rides 1st and build up to the Epic.

We South Africans are distance mad, often to our detriment.

Erik and Olivier were the youngest entrants at 24/25 years old.... they did exceptionally well, but that is different from a 17/18 year old...

I also believe the age limit should be upped to at least 21.

Francois, do you know the oldest male and female age for this year?

kingjreid, when I was 17 I also thought I knew everything and was bulletproof...

I can understand you not wanting to take advice from your parents, cos that's just an instinctive thing. But these are people (not your parents), mostly more than double your age giving you some advice because they've learned through experience... Maybe there's something in that.

ya know i understand that, thanks...

... i guess what got to me was my friend phoning me from the epic on day 5 i think and telling me what an awesome ride he had and what a blast it was...

Everyone under 21 is to young. Not that they can't ride it, but it mess up your body. Your body is not developed well enough to handle it if you are younger. Also lack a bit of that mental strenght
