I am doing ODD.. This has not been a good year for me training wise... I hope after Saturday I will feel more positive and motivated. Seems like it is going to be a wet 50km...

 

Lekker race, wish I was in a position to do it.

Enjoy, and have a short little walk on Sarkie's for me  :thumbup:

I think the reason for early online race entry  closure has to do with the T Shirts that need to get ordered and made.

 

Could be talking out my Arse though as Saturdays Om die dam will be my 1st every HM.

yeah - but then just allow entries without shirts on the day...but anyway..i'll remember next time to make sure I enter well before

So having established earlier that Comrades can be done on 600k's training, can someone help me with a more immediate problem:  Can 2Oceans be done on a wing and a prayer?

 

I am nursing a calf strain and on physio instruction I haven't run in a week and a half now...  hope to do an easy trot tomorrow to test it out, but things not exactly going to plan....

 

easily, oceans is an easy marathon and 14k of a little vasbyt.

 

will also be running on a wing & a prayer.

That's where multiple personalities comes in handy...  all can chat, argue, sing (some better than others) and tell jokes to each other all day long. Ehhrr... I've heard. You know, a friend told me.  :ph34r:  :whistling:  

 

Ja, very little beats a nice solo run...

So Saturday was the Om Die Dam Ultra. After pulling out of Comrades I readjusted my event goals from doing the Ultra as my qualifier to doing the HM in a gentle 2:28 as this was going to be my first half marathon ever.

 

On Friday afternoon while entering Harties I saw a sign that said “Sarkies Nek” and it clicked what Andrew Steer said and immediately I was happy I didn’t have to battle with this beast of a hill.

 

Once the event got underway everything was going to plan. I kept my speed low and HR down. It was quite frustrating to see everyone passing me and I had to keep telling myself that they “Were Probably” doing the 10km route and only had 2km to go. Once the 10km  & HM split things seemed to settle down and I was still keeping my rhythm although it had picked up slightly. After 10km my Garmin said to me it took me 1:02:20 and I started doing the maths. No way was I going to back off completely now to do it in 2:28, so I readjusted my goal to 2:15 and maybe if I push in the last 5km a sub 2:10.

While running past Jasmaine (The Windmill) I found that the legs were no long in cruise control, the HR had picked up and I knew I was now running with purpose. It was at this point that I realised all the people running in the opposite direction weren’t doing a second lap in reverse (To make it a marathon distance) but the route was actually an out and back on this section and that meant that unpleasant decline just before that boomed off suburb was going to be an even more unfriendly uphill, but with single digit km’s left I couldn’t afford to save myself for it if I wanted a sub 2:15 or maybe even the sub 2:10 so it was back to a state of “As you were” for me.

 

In the last km I ran past my sister’s house where we were staying for the weekend and seeing my sisters, wife, kids and family all there cheering for me gave me such a lift and I was more than happy coming home in 2:05:55.

For the rest of the day my sister, wife, kids and I sat outside on the drive way cheering the rest of the athletes. My sister in her heavy Dutch accent chanting “Well done IT” and myself “ only 450m or 2 corners to go” as the time neared for the various milestones we changed to “a Sub 5 /5:30/6 Hour….. is still possible keep pushing” I loved it and it brought back childhood memories of comrades.

 

For those of you that did the event and the Ultra well done and I hope you had a great day out. Weather was perfect for us out there.

Om die Dam Ultra is one !@#@#$#% race  :blush:  It is the first ultra of the year and everybody (except Caroline) struggles. The race organisers made last minute changes to the route and the route ended up 500 meters longer... which is very far after 50km. It was very humid on Saturday. I ran 15 min slower than last year, finishing in 5:30, but I am happy. My fitness level is definitely not where I was last year. Om die Dam is a good eye opener to increase my weekly kilometers. Looking forward to some shorter distances this week, and then resting next week before Two Oceans.

Forgot to mention it was a well-organised race, water points were excellent. I enjoyed the watermelon and other fruit on the route. Parking and traffic was a disaster as expected.

Hi. I'm 18 years old and I want ro run my first marathon this year but it sounds like everyone just gets injuries from running. Any advice for getting into it?

 

start slowly and don't increase by more than 10% week on week. Start with 2 5km runs per week for a couple of weeks...then add in a slightly longer weekend run and work towards increasing that to 10 km after 2 more weeks...so by 4 weeks you are running 2 x 5km and 1 x 10km. Then increase those 5km mid week runs to 8km over the next two weeks....and then follow the 10% increase routine by increasing mileage on the weekend run...and adding a third mid week run

Don't try run it this year else you will be part of the "everyone just gets injuries" club.

 

Decide if you really want to do it and then start training for next year. Besides running uphill is easier on the joints than running and braking downhill.

 

Before joining a club and getting the licence etc get into a good routine and build up your base slowly. pushing mileage to fast will get you injured.

 

First start with a half Marathon training program like the below attachment

if after that you find running is for you , then after that go onto a marathon training program

If afterwards you are still mad enough to do it then enter comrades and select the best comrades training program for you.

 

Just my 2c (Not that its worth anything as i haven't run one yet and have had to withdraw from this year to make better prep for next year)

My honest opinion, I wouldn't run marathons til you are at least in your 20's... I know there are people that do, but the toll it takes on your body, at a time when you aren't fully developed is immense. Would honestly just focus on 21km's - it's a great distance that is challenging but importantly doesn't wreck things too much. Build up slowly as per Stretches post (maybe even slower) and enjoy 5/6 halves before considering a full.

 

In the rest of the world people are quite happy to run just half's, it's the Comrades carrot in SA that has distorted our whole scale - if you want to understand, just tell a foreign runner you're running a marathon just as training  :blink:

 

And most importantly - enjoy your running  :thumbup:
