Need advice on a strong Mtb rim

I have a mountainbike tandem and have been experiencing problems with the front rim.  the first one broke when we rode through a ditch and the second one bend so badly in sand that nobody are able to get it 100% straight.

I want to buy a 29er rim that will be strong enough to withstand the normal bumps and bruises of mountainbiking.

Any recommendations that will not break the bank

By the way I am running tubeless so would like to continue with that.

Normal recommendations of Flow EX / WTB i25 etc but it may be worth going for one of the strong, wide DH rims due to the additional weight. It's not going to be as light, of course, but you need the extra strength...

Thinking along the lines of a SunRingle MTX33 or something like that.

Tubeless can be done on that no problem. Just a strip of gaffa tape and a proper tubeless valve and you're sorted.

Thanx renaissance Man.  If you talk about DH rims, do you mean Down Hill?  If so, are those rims not 26"?

Are those commonly available from retailers?

Oh, poo... yeah, I had a wednesday moment.

Yeah, the MTX33 is a 26er rim. And no, it's not commonly available. The FLOW ex, however, is. And it comes in Niner variants as well.

Also thinking on the tyre front - what tyres are you running at the moment? Width etc. Reason I ask is if they're low volume tyres you may want to look at getting something with a bit more volume and / or sidewall strength so that you allow the tyre to take a lot of the impact.

Have a Weirwolf 2.3 on at the moment, previously had a Maxis 2.2 on.

Thinking of it, i will even put a steel rim on just to have enough strenght ^_^

Forgot to mention it must be a 36 spoke rim

I think Flows come in 36 hole as well.

Weirwolf 2.3 is reasonably good in terms of volume, but the sidewalls aren't the strongest.

Maybe have a look at the Maxxis EXO carcass tyres or Schwalbe Super Gravity. Yes, they're heavier but they're FAR stronger. Super Gravity strongest of all. Unfortunately though they're only available on the Magic Mary, Hans Dampf & Rock Razor - which although provides oodles of grip is probably not what you're looking for.

Thank you sir

Flows are the only 36 hole rims readily available.  Pair with a Hope hub and you can do a 4 spoke cross.  Good double butted spokes and you are looking at R2066 before rim strip, tire, valve and sealant.  Ideally you want a 40 rim hole for a tandem.  You could use a road tandem rim for 29" but they are pretty narrow and the components are also not easy to find.

i have an old 40 hole road tandem wheel, was thinking of that, but it is a bit narrow for a 2.3 mtb tyre

I have a pair of Mavic Crossroc and they are holding out fine, even doing some jumping with them.. and my weight is over 115kg's.... they only cost about R5000 - R6000 per complete wheelset.

It's a tandem - chances are the combined weight of both riders is well in excess of your 115kg :)

And 24 spoke. I predict it'll explode the first time the front brake is applied.

A little off topic, but since the brains trust is here...

I have a strong carbon rim (LB 35mm wide 650b) and am trying to decide on spokes for the rear. I built the front up with Revolutions, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. Why should I not use the same on the back?

I'm not a ripper/jumper, but I do push the back around a bit. Pyga 120. I weigh 79/80.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
