MTB Shock

I need to replace my front shock and I found a good deal here on the Hub.

I'm not that technical on bikes as most of my know how to comes from the forum. My current problem is that my current shock is a straight steerer and the shock that I'm interested in is a taperred steerer. Will it fit?

Thanks

It might, depending on the size of your head tube at the bottom. If it's a 44mm head tube then you can get a headset which allows the fork to fit. It also depends what sort of headset you have at the moment. If it's integrated, you're outta luck.

It's not simply a "No" - it's a yes, but only if.

What bike is it that you have?

Thanks for the replies. The bike is a 2012 Merida Big 9 500. I have measured the outside diameter of head tube and it is approx 50mm(do not know if this will mean anything). How do I check the current head bearing set?

Thanks

@droo here is a pic of the head tube from the bottom. I have already removed the bottom part of the headset to measure the inner diameter. It looks like 44mm.

You may be able to get some form of an adaptor but it will look like an absolute mess. It won't work very well either as far as I can see. As I said earlier I would not do it.

Have you tried it before?

No, he hasn't. He's already told the OP that it can't be done, when it can, with an external headset. No mess. No eyesore. They work just like a normal headset, except the bearing is outside the confines of the headtube, in its own enclosure.

I did this successfully with my Mongoose Otero. No issues this side, looks or handling wise.

Agreed, not a helpful post at all.

This is how it looks.

*edit...

Not my bike. 44mm headtube with external Headset cup.
