Hi all

I need advice with regards to buying a mountain bike. Hardtail.

my budget is a maximum of 11k. I am so over whelmed with the choices out there that I can't make up my mind. I don't mind buying a bike that isn't the newest in its range or from previous years. i'm just looking for a sturdy, reliable mtb with good components. i am looking at Silverback?

Does anyone know of anything better or had this similar experience when buying a mtb and could give advice?

Hi Anna27

Welcome to the Bike Hub!

At the budget you give you should be able to choose from a relatively large-ish group of bikes not just Silverback. You should be able to find bikes from Titan, Specialized, Giant etc. Silverback and Giant both have reps for giving value for money bikes to the public. My personal recommendation is Silverback. Go for a Stride 10. It's a good decent bike that will be decently specced and still leave you with enough money to purchase a good helmet (there I prefer Bell but there's many good makes available) and a decent pair of cycling shorts. Also try to get a cycling shirt (First Ascent is pretty nice) and a pair of gel padded gloves. As a rough idea of your budget 8k should be for the bike and the rest for the kit. That should allow you to do as I've suggested above.

Good luck finding a bike and I hope my advice helps.

Thanks for the advice! I am definitely in favour of a Silverback! I have money set aside for equipment and such so 11k for the bike alone is what i am willing to spend so any new suggestions? :)

Then depending on bike shop you could look at a Slade 2 or Slade 3. Will be well specced and they are 27.5 inch wheel size bikes. I personally own a Slade 1 and find it to be a great bike.

If you are new to cycling buy yourself a new bike. You will have the peace of mind of a warranty and the bike will be set up properly for you.

There are lots of brands, but Silverback has the best aftersales in SA and they are one of the best in terms of value for money. If I was in your shoes, I would not consider anything else.

Now is the time to buy. Bike shops are discounting the 2015 bikes because the 2016 are starting to arrive.

Welcome Anna27. I did a similar tradeoff fairly recently and the silverbacks came out top at that price range in new bikes. Alternatively looking second hand something like this would be a good bet

Remember you're probably going to want to get tubeless tyres and conversion off the bat, so expect to pay around R1k for that.

Won't easily find better value than this at under 10K

Thanks for all the advice! It really helps a lot! I received a quote for a 2015 Silverback Sola 3 for R10 500 with Deore components.... Thoughts?

Seems you've made up your mind, not that I'm anti silverback, I've always loved silverbacks ever since BMX days but at that budget you can get a second hand 26er dual suspension, just a suggestion.

If you can push to the Sola2 there is quite a big fork upgrade between the two, and the crankset changes to a hollowtech one which is also a pretty good change. Those were the exact two bikes I was looking at and just found the Sola2 slightly better value.

Whichever bike you get I am sure you will be happy. But make sure:

1) it is the right size for you - ladies specific bikes often have different ratios and my friends have found them much more comfortable.

2) ask them to fit a ladies saddle of the correct width.

With these two in place things are MUCH more pleasant on any bike :)
