Is 'losing' weight really the difficult part?

Re: the magical fattening properties of beer. Nothing magic about it. It's merely calorie rich (approx 100 kcal/330ml depending on the brand). So suck 2 Castles a night and if this isn't compensated for through exercise, your basal rate, or reduced food intake, then you'll pick up weight.

How do some people drink 2 Castles a night and not pick up weight? Well, their net energy balance compensates for those 200 kcals. How so? One mechanism is they have a higher basal metabolic rate. Go back and look at my post this am. Key findings from a study suggest a BMR difference between otherwise comparable subjects of over 700 kcal/day. So all other things being equal, subject A can suck over 6 beers a day and maintain their weight. Subject B does the same and he/she'll store over 4000 kcal a week. Roughly speaking they'll put on 1kg of adipose fat within 2 weeks.

Running is a strange sport at the best of times (which rule# applies?), but you expend the same amount of energy irrespective of speed, roughly 70 kcal/km. Cycling is more complicated due to the influence of resistance, climbing, drafting etc), but numbers I've seen suggest 20 kcal/km on the flat at 24 kph (a nice easy pace for some). So every km run, is 'equivalent' to 3.5 km cycling. I also suspect that calories consumed on the bike are often forgotten about when we think weight-loss, and runners probably consume less, if anything, during their run - never thought about it too much.

Last point, we are all invariably unreliable witnesses when it comes to such matters. Unless you live in a laboratory, plugged into banks of machines, or have regular diet and physiological tests that is. Snickers anyone?

Beer puts on fat for me. I did the Ocsober, and lost 2kg, but promptly regained them in November. Thats with disciplined eating, and a step up in cyclng intensity. One thing I'm lucky with is that there's no junk food merchants in the platteland, and no cafés to buy chocs.

and as for the OP's question.

I see people that have iron motivation for their weightloss goals, they seem to make it easy.

I myself fall off the wagon more than i fall off my bike (alot) so yes....i find it difficult to lose weight.

I been hovering around 88kg for about 8 years and I know that it is 6kg too much. .

A much longer than normal stint in camp ( wife was in Perth for 2 months so no point in going home) has been the ideal time to take charge. Camp life is good for experimenting with the eating plan as there is no corner shop for a pie or chocolate - The Fixed meal times make things easier.

The key has been the daily measurement after my morning ride and  exercise.  The feed back lets me know what is working and what is not.

Now all I gotta do is keep it off during the six weeks at home from the beginning of December . . . . .

Been hovering around 100kg for a very long time now.

I started jogging in the mornings at least 3 times a week and reduced carbs. Still cheat over weekends and eat pizza, braai broodjies, beer etc.

In the past 3 months I have lost around 10kg's.

The great thing is that jogging is now enjoyable because of increased fitness and helps with the MTBing as well.

Cannot believe what a difference 10kg's make when riding up hills. That alone is a reward in itself.

Like your training plan and weekend plans! LOL

Hardest part for me is the weekends.....difficult to watch rugby or any sport without a beer!
