Jhb Botanical gardens ride direction?

Hi folks,

I cycle home every day from Zoo lake to Randpark Ridge.

My favourite part of the route is the 2Km’s through the JHB botanical gardens.

I enter the gardens near the Squash Club on Orange road and follow the bike trail clockwise past Marks Park where after I exit the gardens again at Thomas Bowler street.

The problem is that I seem to be the only rider using the trail in a clockwise direction. I always give way to oncoming riders since they’re going downhill and until recently I’ve never had issues.

During the last two weeks I’ve had an oncoming rider swear at me and another tried to shove me down the steep embankment at Marks Park

Is there an official ride direction at the gardens and I’m the idiot riding against the flow or are the Straviaans just taking that section too seriously?

Anti clockwise makes more sense to me.

From day 1 riding there I was always told anti-clockwise. I do encounter ppl going the opposite way now and again.

Thing is it's a park with no signs, you're not going to be able to enforce rules if ppl don't want to, and OP as a commuter if it suits you to ride clockwise and ppl tell you it's the wrong way, will you change your route?

Along the fence CCW...

otherwise I think it is

CCW - 2xC's = even number = even days of the month

CW - 1xC = uneven days of the month...

  ^_^  :P

(I get bored in my mind a lot so think of things like that (solutions to things) when I ride..)

That section adds about 2Km to my commute. I just ride it for fun. If the consensus is that that section is exclusively anticlockwise then I'll select another route

There is no official direction - ride it any way you want - people should learn manners and give way to people riding uphill.

Agreed. Ride. Be mindful of safety - yours and that if others. Enjoy. No need to be a douche.

There is no official direction but most guys come up the Spruit from Fratelli side and then loop in to the Botanical gardens turning right, and loop around to the top of botanical gardens to Judith the to  Marks Park section and go up along the tree line with the Soccer club on your RHS.

Makes more sense that way and the trail works like that and flows that way.

So although no official direction (like on the whole Spruit) but I reckon at least for the Marks Park tree line piece its unofficially from Judith Rd down, especially up at the top of the tree line.

I have come across some guys on the weekend riding up and was really motoring and nearly took them out as it wasnt where I expected them to be and in all honesty have never ever seen anyone riding "up" as the trail doesn't flow that way.

So do it - but be aware you may find some people at speed going the opposite way,

HfxO--- its a no brainer dude. Its a DOWN line( anti clockwise as you say ) ,always has been and always will be . its the one place on the spruit-emmies-3 parks whatever- that I will not giveway to an uprider. Hubbers like V12man and Uni only serve to create confusion and possible collision in this regard. We have posted stuff on this before and it seems their logic is still mired in tar .

PLEASE RIDE UP SOMEWHERE ELSE.THANK YOU .

#### you and #### your uphills!

But seriously on an unofficial trail there's always going to be confusion but when it comes to your uphill right of way...If Im riding DOWN a trail that has berms on it, and someone rides up it, I will run them over.

Nope - we don't create confusion - THERE IS NO DIRECTIONALITY on the rides - there never has been - and as one of the original builders and riders of that line 20 years or so ago - I am sure on that.

People must have respect other riders and consider what might happen in the event of a collision - if you are going downhill (and its only just a minor slope) then you MUST in terms of the IMBA accepted rules give way to the person climbing it - just have some common sense, and courtesy - IT IS NOT A RACETRACK.

The same problem also exists on the northern fenceline route - be cautious there too.
