Hey Jewbacca,

Agreed 100%!!!

No hate here towards suspension forks. My reason for going rigid fork - my QFR (Quest for Reliability). I want to eliminate any and all things that might go wrong, as much as I can of course. Hence the SS route.

I stay out in the sticks, so when something does go wrong, it usually becomes an ordeal to (eventually) get the bike to a shop etc. Basically I want a bike that is ride-able 24/7, 7 days per week, with the minimum amount of tweaking/fixing/maintenance required.

I started out on a Bridgestone MB-1 back in 1993 and rode it for many years. Still slapping myself for ever selling that bike. So, to get back on a rigid fork wasn't really anything unusual for me. In fact, it made me feel right at home :P

I still regret selling my MB0 - dumbest move ever - you will enjoy the str - build it quick.

Couldn't wait for the frame to arrive (next week some time). On my way to Wayne to do the SS conversion on current bike. Will build it over on the ST-R once I have the frame.

Ja, the itch man. It's a fantastically horrible thing.

We converted the Twen-9 to SS. I rode around a bit with a massive smile on my face. Up and down a few steep hills etc., just to get the feel. Had a long discussion with Wayne, and then decided to leave the bike with him and have the frame shipped directly to his place. He will do the build for me this coming week, and I will collect the bike when ready.

Even though the test ride was short, I can say without hesitation that I am SS crazed. Just loved the direct power when you drop the hammer on the uphills. Can't wait for the ST-R to be ready. Good thing I have a crazy work week ahead, else I might have gone certifiably mad.

Man, this is going to be a long week. Doing my best to stay busy and not think about the new bike too much. It's not working

Here's the planned build:

Frame: Momsen ST-R 29 (L) White
Brakes: Avid BB7 MTN Cable Disc Brakes
Wheels: Rapidé TR29 TrailRacer Wheelset
Fork: Niner carbon (tapered steerer)
Handle bars: Rapidé ControlStick 720-8 Flat Bars
Grips: ESI Extra Chunky
Stem: Rapidé ControlColumn Stem 90mm
Seat post: Rapidé ControlTower
Saddle: Brooks B-17 Narrow
Crank: Shimano SLX (175mm)
Pedals: Shimano Saint flat pedals
Chainring: 32T Rapidé SingleMinded® NW Ultralight
Cog: 20T Rapidé SingleMinded® Singlespeed Cog
Chain: YBN S9CR 9 Speed Chain

Note: Rear wheel is single speed specific (i.o.w. not a dish), built onto a Rapidé SingleMinded® Single Speed Hub. This is being done to prevent me from doing anything crazy like putting gears on the ST-R

Please please find real hydraulic brakes.... they work so much better.

No, sorry. I specifically got the BB7s after much research. If you live where I live (and ride), you will understand why I need 100% field serviceable brakes. No exceptions/compromises.

I don't compromise braking perfomance - ever - realistically I have never needed to do anything to a quality hydraulic brake in the field other than change pads in about 10 years of riding them.

I am not 100% sure you can even use cable brakes on the STR - they are definately designed for hydraulics - but I am not familiar with a BB7 setup - except to know they don't outbrake my guides, which are now 3 years old without needing service other than pads - it is your call though, but don't be scared of hydraulics reliability and ease of service - chances of having front and rear failure concurrently is about zero, and you only need 1 brake to get you home.

And yes - I have run my SS home a few times - 15k in carbon shoes is fun - but it was tire issues and I would have needed a new tire to fix that pretty much - every time I run it has been tires.... :)

Hey V12man, you sound like a nice guy, really. And I know you mean well. But you are trying to ruin our friendship, because I am already way over budget here as it stands. So give a guy a break here, please man  .

My BB7s do not and will not ever out-brake your guides. No question here. But as far as cable disc brakes go, they are pretty damn good. Probably the best, or some of the best out there. I spent weeks researching this before I bought them. Compared to various other flavours of cable disc brakes I have used, these things have no equal.

Anyway, I know you just want the best for me, and so do I. However, I just cannot even contemplate such an acquisition at this time. First things first, e.g. the ST-R frame, etc. etc. (see list above).

Spoke to him today. He has everything he needs for the build, and will do it over the weekend. I'll post pics once I get some from him. The wait, man. I tell you, it's killing me. I'm driving my wife nuts.
