Building a SingleSpeed

Howsit guys

As the topic states, im looking to build a ss.

Criteria is that it needs to be

CHEAP,

as light as the "cheap" would allow.

Rigid fork

simple and as low on maintenance as possible

Medium/large frame,

mech disk brakes,

26" wheels,

wide bars.

flat pedals.

Now obviously the choice has to be made wrt the frame, Horizontal or vertical dropouts, Horizontal being the more expensive option as far as i can see. Now i don't mind a tensioner but it looks messy

In my workshop i have a perfectly good large Giant elwood frame, no name v-brake wheels with the commuter tyres, seat post, and handle bars

Firstly it does not look like the frame is disk compatible, any way to covert it so it can take a disk brake mount?

Secondly, would fitting a rigid 26' fork kill the geometry?

I may be better off buying a used frame off the hub

I would like to build this to supplement my Giant anthem for when i feel like a bit more of a challenge / fooling around at the spruit if that makes sense

Any advise or pointers from the experts would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Buy yourself a singlespeed kit and a tensioner, and give it a go, see if you like it before going too big.

SS riders in general are DEFINATELY not about the bike.... :)

If you want to try a rigid SS fork - I assume that elwood is old enough to use an old school threaded fork? - then I have one (steel) you can try in my garage if the steerer is long enough.

In the real world you won't notice small changes in geometry too much - given that in general you don't ride anything particulary tricky on an SS - at least most of the time anyway.

If this is going to be used as a commuter bike forget the wide handlebars. They will get in the way when you are not on the cycle lane!

Good luck and post some pics

Definitely not going to be a commuter thats for sure, thanks for the heads up though

SS bikes should not be build up on a small budget with old parts lying around. You will ruin it for yourself. Your SS should be the flagship bike of your stable.

Very difficult to put the Anthem on the storage rack, left abandoned and alone, to fight for itself,

I do know what you mean though, always wanted a blingy single speed, but never knew if i would like it. Hence doing it on the cheap until i realize

The fork seems to be the only missing thing

Brings the price up close to wolfie's carbon ss

SS should be whaterver the fark you want it to be, that's the nice part of building one up.

Your certainly are not buying it out of the 2016 bike brochure.

If you want to do it cheap, it's more than your right. It's also as much your right to build and spend a 40k machine that will make any Nedbank CEO blush, and salivate with envy.

Take the V-man's advice, build one with what you got, ride it, and soon before long, if the bug bites, you will be finding ways to get the SS frame you want, and create the monster you have been dreaming of. (weather it be R5k or R50k)
