Mr V12 man, you always come to the rescue. Thank you very much!

:) My pleasure - 10 to 1 you have a fracture in that thumb...

My most painful long term injury was my left thumb. Unfortunately I'm slightly left hand dominant. Ended up with two pins that were subsequently removed.

Dam thing is still a little sensitive and its two years later. Take all the medical advice. Listen carefully would be my advice.

Ouch. How long did it take you to get on the bike again?

Andrew Barrow at Sunninhill Hospital - any one of the three Barrows in that practice.

Yup, widely known as one of the best hand surgeons in RSA.

he did a op on my wrist. zero pain. full mobility. also the scar is nearly invisible.

he is the go to guy when surgeons need a op on their hands.

Not sure. Let's see. Crashed on a Sat. Managed to put it back in on the side of the road. It popped out again and I fell over from the pain, went to casualty, they put me under and set it again. It popped out on Monday and I had it operated on and pins put in on Wednesday. Woke up in a cast so couldn't ride I think 6 weeks. Was a bit annoyed as I didn't expect that. Then had the pins out in another operation and woke up with yet another cast. That came off after 2 weeks. Then rehab as the thumb was by this time stiff and the muscle had atrophied.

Just to give you an idea. Hope you have it easier. All from a low speed off in the dark when I hit a patch of bloody sewage from a blocked drain.

I pulled the ligaments in my thumb and was off the bike for 2 1/2 months.

Biggest mistake was just going to casualty.  They x-rayed, saw nothing was broken and gave me a brace for wrists / hands.  After 3 weeks of no improvement I went to a hand specialist.  They told me the brace was useless as it didn't provide enough support and gave me a specially moulded brace just for the thumb.   Also started physio to get some movement back.

Would have been longer, but I didn't want to miss out on Xterra so I ended up taping the brace on and riding like that.

Had to strap it for the next 6 months or so when I went out on the mtb otherwise it would hurt too much.

Still not 100 % 2 years on.

Sounds hectic! I wish you a quick return to the saddle. Mine was a silly jump that went pear shaped. I managed to carry on with my ride and even showed a group of MTB foreigners around Saddlebrook. I thought it would be better by now but it's still painful and swollen.

That's awful. Are you still riding with the strap?
