I was rear ended by a car a while back and the LBS told me that the rear stays are bent. Bike is a 2012 Spez Rockhopper with aluminium body.

Repairable, or have I suddenly got some spare parts?

bend it, ride it, lets us know how it goes and if you unsure put it in the classifieds! have some other guy test it for you.

but gotta go with rocky here its spare parts.

Unless you can anneal it and redo heat treating it would not be a good idea to straighten it or even ride it like a taxi.

As rouxtjie said, strength will be compromised where it is bent.

But I could lend it to people I don't like for ****s and giggles!

I once bent a deore crank arm by smashing pedal first into a rock. Luckily it was the non drive side so I removed the arm. wrapped it in a lappie and put it in a vice. slowly tightening it till it matched the curve of the other arm. It actually worked and I rode those cranks for months afterwards and forgot about it completely. So never say never.

Unfortunately a frame is a different story. The integrity would be compromised even if you you manage to bend it straight. And If both stays are bent I'd say you have little to no chance of getting them back to the way they were originally.

Vice, big shifting/pipe.... go for your badge

How bent is bent? If you didn't pick it up and the LBS did, it can't be that bad....

If it isn't insured, I would say give it a go. As long as the tubing hasn't kinked, it should be fine....

Failing which, PM me for my postal address. I'll take it off your hands and give it a go if you don't want to  :whistling:

I wouldn't bother. There are plenty of good, aluminium frames for sale for next to nothing on the Hub.

Hopefully you have the details, get the person who rear ended you to replace the frame. It is afterall, their fault

Another thing to consider. If the impact was enough to bend the rear stays, there may be other, not so obvious damage. The frame may give way on you. Chuck it away.
