QR or thru-axle rear - what determines which to use?

Hi guys & girls,

This may sound like a dumb question :whistling: , but what exactly determines if you need a QR or a thru axle at the rear? Is it the frame itself, or does the hanger determine this?

Can any frame take both a QR or a thru-axle as long as you use the correct hanger?

The frame. If the bike has drop-outs at the rear, you use a QR.

There are exceptions to the rule, such as DT Swiss' thru-axle system for use in drop-outs.

Sorry mate. Time to go shopping for some through axel wheels. Makes sure you know what axel diameter and hub width to get.

Edit: sorry, maybe I'm wrong. It's difficult to see with the black on black. Can you post another pic with remove the transport frame spacer removed.

I Researched this option on my Scott genius ...Converting  rear from QR to Through axil .So American classic hubs Ta conversion ,no problem,Drop out no problem Actual through axil more difficult to get ...but at nearly R 2000 for the pleasure ,It'll have to wait a while

im in the opposite boat,

bought thru axle wheels, and have quick release frame, so no adapters as of yet,

going to machine end caps down, and make adapters to suit

That seems to be the problem I'm having as well. I can replace the hub on my rear wheel but apparently the actual thru-axle I need is a problem.

Unfortunately I don't have the frame or any other pics with me at the moment.

Was hoping I can maybe replace the hangers with quick release ones and I'm golden but I guess it doesn't work that way.

That's 12 x 142, almost guaranteed. Some wheelsets are convertible with new end caps - what hubs do you have currently?

At the moment I have XT quick release hubs. I can deal with upgrading/replacing the hub. My problem is that I don't know which thru-axle I need exactly.

Edit:

Apparently I need a frame spesific "nut" to srcew the thru-axle into but it does not come with the thru-axle.

Don't you have the frame make or model either? (this is a rhetorical question...well I  hope)

because I can guarantee you can find all the specs on the internet or even more pics...if you cant, give me that info and I will google
