KMC Missing Link vs Chain Tool

Sure, but if you don't have them this works! Any idea why you can do a 9 speed one by hand though?

I know, I bodged with a channel lock pliers for years.

Not sure why the 9sp ones are easier, maybe your chain's just a bit more worn? They do get looser with age.

10sp (particularly SRAM) ones are harder to remove because the tolerances are tighter.

SRAM did this intentionally with their design and call it "Powerlock" on their 10 & 11sp systems. On the 8 & 9sp it's called "Powerlink"

"SRAM chain engineers developed PowerLock® as a tool free, sure and consistent way to connect our 10-speed chains. While it does not require special tools for install, the especially tight tolerances of 10-speed drive trains mandated that each PowerLock® is good for a *one-time application only."

*As I said in and earlier post, they can be reused.

I use the KMC ones, which even say "reusable" on the packet.

You'll know when you can't reuse a SRAM one because the pins fall out.

I think with reuse of links a bit of common sense is required. If you can remove the link by hand, then don't use it again. But if it still seems tight and the links click in snug, I think you are pretty safe. The suppliers are always going to be over cautious.

Picked up my Park Tool today and it opened my (previously tight and tricky) quick link in a split second - as you would expect.

I'm looking forward to hassle free bike cleans from now on . . . . :-)

Mechanically I am seriously challenged. I have studied this thread now as I am struggling (read sweating swearing etc) and have not been able remove the chain link from my 11 speed chain. I bought the chain tool and it seems this tool can only close the link and not open it. What is the trick I am missing?

Google the youtube demo of it. :whistling:

Ja, but you don't realise that you 'need' the pliers until you've used them. A faff becomes a 2 second operation.

Best addition to bicycle toolbox ever
