Hmm I have 115 and have 12 years+ working experience in the long term skills shortage list.

It says minimum of 100 points, so I wonder if its been lowered or if its just related to the long term shortage list?

So that 100 minimum that they state is in order for you to lodge an EOI (expression of interest). That is basically just like putting your name in a hat. The 160+ is what you want in order to receive an invitation to apply.

Yep.

So adding in the 50 points for offer of employment puts him at 165.

If he takes offer of employment outside auckland its an additional 10 points.

Spot on!

On a similar note to working out of Auckland... I see they are closing the Canterbury Skills & Employment hub on 29 June 2018 (with applications no longer accepted from 1 June 2018).

It's a pity because I think Christchurch (and Canterbury in general) are great, especially for those wanting a more relaxed way of life, less hustle & bustle, but still the convenience of about everything you can get in a big city.

Plus housing prices aren't mental, hahaha!

I agree.

Been down a few times for work and it seems like a really nice place.

Can things get even more relaxed than in Auckland?

I often miss living in JHB!

One of the major downsides of NZ is the price of dental work.

Wife broke a tooth a few weeks ago and that was almost $1000

She is in Tahiti at the moment and broke another tooth.....

She gets back tomorrow afternoon and then its off to the dentist again on friday...

On a side note, maybe I should become a dentist???

I know right!

I went to the dentist last year sometime and they wanted to charge $1200 for a root canal.

And with my Southern Cross medical pan I only get $750 per year for dental.

I had a root canal done in JHB before (granted it was about 5 years ago), but that was 1200 RAND!

Vietnam is apparently the answer. I have some Saffer friends that also couldn't believe the price of dentistry in NZ. They went to Vietnam in December for a holiday and used it as an opportunity to get some low cost dental work done.

They suggested I do the same, when I visited SA in Jan-Feb this yer, but I told them that visiting the dentist is the last thing I want to do on a holiday, haha!

FYI I paid R1800 for a flippen normal Filling in Joburg the other day and now its sore so need root canal...I don't even want to know what that costs...

Faark that - I'm all for 1st world dentistry - hang the cost. I want the finest anesthetics, latest equipment. Last dentist I went to I had to fill in the form on an ipad. My kind of place. Of course I have had to take a second mortgage....

Don't they have a dental school nearby? They are always looking for patients to work on in SA - essentially a free service.

Good point V12man.

Auckland University's med school is on our campus (Auckland City Hospital), but I don't think AU has dental students.

Auckland University of Technology and University of Otago do. AUT's dental school is at the ARDS (Auckland Regional Dental Service) near Henderson. But again, i think they only do scalings, x-rays, and cleanings. No restorative work.

Not sure what services University of Otago offer, but their dental school is in Dunedin, so no quick trip to that dentist.

How do you train a dentist without doing restorative work?

Did some dentistry myself the other day on a hubber who broke a crown off... emergency glue back on... broke off yesterday and he swallowed it.... now needs to be retrieved... ????????????

Has held up for longer than I thought it would... must be 3 weeks now - even surprised my old man who is a retired maxillo facial that it worked as a temp fix.

Being expensive doesn’t mean the treatment is particularly good.

Had a root canal done here for around $2000. Dentist screwed it up. Cost me nearly double that to have someone else fix it.

That was the cost of a pretty decent bike for some pretty basic dentistry.

Yeah I know right. Maybe it's just the general public offering that is limited to those services.

On a slight sidenote, I have been attending a Facilities Management summit over the past 2 days and one of the speakers was talking about the poor management (from a facilities point of view) of hospitals/health boards in NZ (thank goodness ours is one of the good ones).

Anyway, he names a local hospital in Auckland (Middlemore) and said how it was the "largest hospital in the southern hemisphere".

I leaned over to my colleague and called bull on that. Bara claims that title and is about 4x the size as Middlemore (in terms of bed capacity. approx. 3200 vs 800).

I don't envy the facilities engineering department at Bara and the task they have looking after 400+ buildings. On our biggest campus (we have 3), we have "only" have about 25, and a bed capacity of about 1200 (800 adults, 400 for the children's hospital on the same site).

Are you still at Bara?
