Shimano XT 1x11/2x11 farce

Bought a new bike with new XT M8000 2x11 on it. Now I want to convert to 1x11. I buy the 1x11 specific crank from LBS, unwrap it and it and see that it has two sets of chainring bolt holes. It also bears an uncanny resemblance to the 2x11 crank already on my bike.

I call LBS. "That doesn't sound right". LBS calls Shimano rep. LBS calls me back sheepishly ... "Sorry, but the 1x11 crank IS the 2x11 crank, you just need to change the chainrings, so come in for a credit".

In summary: marketing gimmickry at play. Do not fall for the idea that the 1x11 crank is what you need to buy (when everyone is supposedly out of stock).

If you want to go 1 x 11 you can use an existing 2 x 11 Crank - your LBS should have known this if they have any product knowledge...

No marketing gimmicks. Anyone with M8000 product knowledge could have told you that.

I had hoped so, but even you guys list the 1x11 crank as a stock item ... Why not just sell it as a 1x11/2x11 combo?

Because you can buy a 1x 11 Crank separately - NO Chainrings.

You can also buy a 2 x 11 Crankset - WITH Chainrings.

This is the way they are supplied Aftermarket. So Shimano can cater for 2x or 1x Riders.

In your case you bought a complete bike with a 2 x Crankset and Chainrings. To change it to 1x - just remove the Chainrings and put a 1 x Chainring on.

So Shimano actually saved you money there.

Your LBS on the other hand tried to make money out of you...

EDIT: as per Naas above.

There is a reason they make the distinction.

If you had done even 1 google search you wouldn't be in this situation.. No sympathy from me..

Yes, it's quite nifty that the conversion from 2x to 1x11 is actually so simple, the issue is for folk like me who already have the 2x setup and want to convert (so probably not a big segment of the market). Either way, the specs and marketing should be clearer (even on your site ... which I'm a frequent customer of). It's a simple thing to advertise ... "This doubles up as a 1x and 2x crank".

My LBS did not know, now they do. They should've known for sure.

Your sympathy would've been appreciated, but what would be more appreciated is your googling 101 - my numerous searches didn't reveal this fact. Please be so kind as to do 1 search for us and post link here so we can point people to the info.

Just like XTR, XT M8000 will continue to allow options, with 1x11, 2x11 and 3x11 drivetrain configurations available. The standard crankset is the same for both 1x and 2x setups, although it’s to be confirmed if the 3x crank is different again.

The problem I'm seeing with using a 2x crank and fitting a single chainring is the chainline. I currently have the previous model 2x XT crank and when I fitted the new 11 speed cassette the chainline was out on the 42t gear, quite badly out. So as far as I can see if you keep your 2x and fit a single ring, you might run into the same problem. The 2x crank is made so that you can use your top 5-6 gears while on the smaller chainring, and the bottom 5-6 gears while on your bigger chainring.

As for the 1x crank, the chainline is specifically designed to be in between the 2x chainring lines of the 2x crank, and that makes it possible to have a good chainline whether you are on your 11 or 42/40 on the cassette.

If you order from a place like ChainReaction you even have a choice of your chainline, either 50mm or 53mm. Don't shoot me Naas, I wasn't thinking about ordering from ChainReaction, but at the moment it's the only online store that has stock...

Anyway, just my 2 cents worth.

There is a spacer on your crank spindle between the chainrings and the frame which you can move to the other side of your frame. This will adjust the chainline by a few milimeters

As I understand it the 53mm chainline option on M8000 group is intended for 27.5+ bikes which have a longer axle and wider flange to flange distance on the hub. Fitting 53mm chainline crankset to a bike with standard 142 or 135mm axle (these have same flange to flange) would create a chainline disaster.
