Best Road Bike for beginners.

I am also looking for a road bike for the first time in 25 years having ditched my Peter Alan in 1989 for my first Mountainbike.

 

I have a few second hand options I need advise in order which I should look at maybe just the top 3 contenders.

 

1.  Orbia R7,000 - Shimano Tiagra Parts

2   Swinn Fastback Pro   R5,500   Ultegra Parts

3.  Merida Scultura EVO 907 Carbon  R7,500  Ultegra Parts

4.  Pinarello Valerro R5,500

5.  Canondale R3000 CAAD4  R5,200

I am looking at buying a new road bike to start off with. The guy at the bike shop I visited advised me that in terms of value for money, nothing will beat the Silverback Strela (the 2016 model looks spectacular I must say). Not even Giant or Merida will be as good according to him. Does anyone have experience with this bike and is it worth getting? It come with full Shimano equip, but just an 8-speed. Is this good enough to start off with?

What is your length? This will give a good indication what size you would go for. If I were in your shoes go to a shop to check your fit. They will measure you and will give the correct size.

Thank you for all the responses and assistance. So I ended up going for a second hand Giant Defy. Hopefully it will give me many years of faithful service...

Sorry to bring up an old thread. Looking for a second hand bike in the R10-R12k price range. I see the Giant Defy is on Hub for sale? What is the reason for sale? Will be my first road bike, ride off road mostly need something for races, training and base miles in future.

Haha I did check it out very nice looking bike! Going for a bike fit for my new MTB next week or the following and going to get a road one done same time to double check 54 sizes. Then will be on the lookout! Thanks
