I still have my 1996 gold Cinder Cone. Great bike! Sadly the original fork has been replaced. (pic taken off the net)

Had the same 1996 frame with the white and blue Judy and a blue USE seat post.

Hi there,

Sorry found this site in my search for a 1995, 1996 Kona Cindercone.  My husband had one which he absolutely loved but sadly it was stolen about three years back out of our bicycle shed.  If anyone has one forsale please can you let me know.  I would love to surprise my husband with another one.

Okay so i have ridden this bike quite a bit now and absolutely love it. I have made a few component upgrades that some purists wont like as the parts are not period correct but this is how I like it.

Here we see the Kona in its natural habitat:

Fork upgraded to a 2008 RS Reba with 85mm travel and custom gold decals. Thinking of moving changing this back to 100mm and using a 70mm stem:

A Bit of bling in the cockpit area:

Superb job at restoring that rear derailleur and rear brake.

Bike is an absolutely gorgeous achievement.

If it was mine I would have this chainring instead of the triple up front

and this bottle cage

...

Thanks, yeah the long term plan is to 1x9 (or may 1x10) so will definitely look at a different chainring

Nice job!

I have a 1994 Cindercone that has been through a few changes. I rode it in mostly original condition until 2002. Upgrades included wheels, cranks, bars and saddle, and a dodgy RST fork replaced the original dodgy XC51.

Then it had a rigid fork and racks slapped onto it for a stint of touring in Europe. Then I got it ready for the 2004 Cape Epic with Rockshox Duke forks (80mm), XT drivetrain and Ritchey stem and bars. I don't recall seeing any other steel bikes at the Epic, but it was certainly the highest placed one.

It was back to touring duty after that with the rigid fork, and since 2005 it has only been an occasional commuter. I'd love to get a shock on the front again to give it a proper spin.

Nicely done Fleming.

This is my 1996 Kona Cinder Cone getting some TLC. It was the second bike I ever bought and I've kept it all these years. Sadly a lot of the original parts have been replaced.

I dig the disk brake-V-brake combo!

Lusted after an Explosif. First proper MTB was a '94 Cinder Cone. Ian, the owner of the shop* I got it from, had the Exposif. I was uber-jealous.

*More than 20 years later, I moonlight at the same shop...this thread just made me feel very old...

Okay, so time for a small update.

I needed the Reba and a few other parts from this bike for another project so the Sugino crank, front V Brake and Bomber fork are back on the Kona.

As mentioned in a earlier post, I removed the orange paint from the bombers with the intention of polishing them. I tried and gave up due to the amount of work needed. In the end I decided to paint them Satin black which I think matches the other black parts on this bike quite well. I even painted the crown which gives the fork a slightly more modern look.

I have a satin black Sram crankset that I think would really look good but they are 170mm where as I have always used 175mm cranks. Not sure how much difference this will make so may try it.
