Wide range cassette with 2x10

Hi Hubbers

Does anybody run a wide range cassette (11-40) with Shimano 2x10 (38/26)?

Would like to know if it is worthwhile to change my current 11-36 cassette as I'm battling a bit on long steep climbs... yes, I know I should train harder, but I do miss my 24 granny on those very steep climbs

How do you experience the shifting onto the biggest sprocket rings (thinking Praxis here)?

Thanks in advance!

I've got a that very set up. I did go 1x for a bit but missed the top end for pushing and the bottom end for the steep stuff. I'm not racing so the slight extra with the shifter, ring and front mech doesn't bother me.

You can do it, but you must have a long cage RD.

Total capacity is 45t diff

40-11 = 29t

38-26 = 12t

29+12=41t

As for the shifting, the Praxis and XT long cage on the Reign was working perfectly. No trouble at all. I suspect you'd have a bit of trouble if you went for the ghetto range extender way, especially with a 42t.

I've got XT Shadow+, 10s presume it is long cage?

Why not change the small chainring to 24 tooth? This should help with the climbing. I am not a strong climber at all but manage fine with a 24t front and 36t back.

CWC have a 24t for R110, a lot cheaper than an expander sprocket.

Already tried a 24T chainring, but it didn't work. Shimano very clever.. you need to pair the 24AM with 38AM, so I've got to replace both chainrings if I want the 24T.. unless somebody has a different opinion.

the AM rings shift ramps and pins start lower to lift the chain from a 24T inner ring. Without that outer chain ring, your shifting will as good as that of a Nissan Pulsar

because it has the AM rings. :)

AFAIK they have different shifting ramps and pins, to allow the wide shift range.

I'd still consider getting the correct 38/24 AM rings rather than a 40/42t expander cog if I was going to keep a 2x10 setup.  There should be plenty laying around with so many going 1x10.

If it says SGS then it is long cage. 2x10 XT 10spd normally supplied with a GS derailer which is med cage.
