Not to hi-jack your post but I have been thinking about this .... suppose I have a 1*10 drivetrain and normally run a 34 front narrow wide and 11-42 cassette (a long cage XTR shadow RD not '+')  but have a 32 alternate ... would it be possible to have the chainlength such that it would be possible to change between the 2 without chain issues?

Should be no problem. You have plenty 'take up' on a long cage RD.

Going from 34 to 32 ...... the chain only wraps half the chainring.....so the difference is 1 tooth. Your long cage RD can accomodate changes in excess of 40 teeth and a wide range cassette utilises only 31 or 32 of these at most.

I currently have a 1x10 setup with a 36t in front, and I want to change it to a 32t.

How many chain links do you guys think I will need to remove?

If your chain is not already too long, the RD should be able to take up the slack without removing any links. Use the clutch to keep chainslap under control.

If you must remove links then two links should be enough ( 1 set inner plates and 1 set outer plates).

I will surely try it out .... as  soon as my 34t chainring comes out of it's 'Santa embargo'

I change between a 32, 34 and 36 regularly, never adjust. I run a sram  x9 long cage, without a clutch, and never have issues

I'd imagine as much, yeah. What you can do, of course, is get an old section of chain / cut section of chain and use that as an "extension" with a quicklink at either end.

I tried this, not a good idea - I found if the wear/stretch on the old piece of chain is different to rest of the chain, the chain would keep coming off the chainring

Very true.

Hi all,

If you are looking to drop down from a 36 to a 32 best recommendation is to take out 2 full links (2 outer and 2 inner) this will also depend on your chain wear.

If you are going from a 34 down to a 32 or visa versa going up you will be able to do so without removing links.

Just check your chain tension when increasing sizes but going smaller from 34 to 32 shouldn't be a problem.

again this all depends on your original setup, best is to always double check chain wear and tension. It is always a benefit when using a long cage derailleur as it takes up a lot of the slack or extra tension.

Thanks for the info.

I have a SRAM X0 RD with no clutch.

I guess the best would be to change the rings and then see if the chain is too long.
