Noisy MTB Shimano Cleats - any tips?

Anyone have an idea or tip on how to reduce the steal crunching noise the MTB Shimano cleats [standard cleats that comes with the pedals] have, especially when climbing i.e. putting down some power.

Once in a while I take some oil and drizzle it all over the pedal, on the metal plates, the screws, the spring, basically everywhere. Be generous, let the bike/pedal sit in the warm sun for while and then wipe the pedal clean. I also occasionally spray some MR Min on my cleats so there is no friction noise between cleat and pedal surface. I have the M520's.

Clean the pedals, clean the underside of your shoes, lube the pedals, spray cleats of shoes and pedal contact points with silicon spray.

If they still make a noise - service the pedals... and make sure the pedal is tight in the crank arm

If they still make a noise after that, buy a new bike...

Hi Mojoman, what is the difference between the M520's and the standard cleat that comes with the XTR pedals.

Thanks, will try this...

All the SPD pedal cleats are identical

Not sure on the XT pedal but if you want to service the M520's you will need the tool below (and a 8mm spanner and 10mm ring spanner). Easy to service (just don't undo the nut so all the bearings fall out), hardest part is getting pedal off the crank, remember which one turns which way! Non drive side comes off clockwise....(and put chain on large crank blade! to protect knuckles!)

Hi V12man

Pedals are new... Will ensure they are tightened enough - but it is more the steel on steel noise i.e. cleat on pedal, especially left - when I move my foot a little inward [as much as the cleat allows] it is quiet.

Like the lube and Silicon idea...  What silicon spray can one use?

The one I use is Q8 - builders warehouse for a can

Please don't use this to lube the pedal moving parts - use a penetrating oil, or a very light machine oil for that.

You might also just want to clean/replace your cleats - they do wear out eventually.

take them back... let them replace it... or get a credit & get some Crank Brothers

Get a set of Eggbeaters. You can thank me later.

Eggbeaters are great but they chew up the shoes a bit. I rode them for quite a few years. Also work best with a stiff shoe rather than some of the more flexible models that are better for trail/exploring/occasional portaging.

Had similar problem and found that my cleats where too deep in the soles of my shoes causing 'orrible squeaking when applying uphill force to pedals. Tried to find a shim in lbs but gave up and eventually filed the bottom of shoe till flush with cleats...sorted!
