Hi all

I will be down in Cape Town central for 2 weeks with limited time.  What I know about Cape Town and its surrounds is so limited that it can be classified as dangerous!

Are there any good safe trails close by that one can hit for 2-3 hours early morning?

I will be close to the mountain.

Any help will be great guys.  Thanks

1. Front of Table Mountain - mostly jeep track, spectacular views of the city, best ride in group for safety

2. Silvermine - open as of tomorrow, mostly jeep track, check out the recovery after the big fires, spectacular views of Hout Bay and Noordhoek.

3. Contermans Kloof - single track galore, spectacular views of Table Bay and the mountain

4. Hoogekraal - as above

5. Meerendal -as above

6. Koeberg - Flat and easy for kids, wildlife to see, great views, stop at the beach

Go early. It is light by 5am. Later gets hot and windy. Serious south easter can make Hoogekraal, Meerendal and Contermans very difficult and dusty. Actually, serious south easter is a good reason to stay indoors and drink cold stuff.

If you have transport you should also consider some of the Stellenbosch trails, e.g. Jonkershoek. Absolutely stunning early morning. A little further Grabouw also has some amazing tracks.

I have the same question as the OP but taking my road bike (staying in Sea Point).

Best route for a morning ride (5-8am)?

DJR?

Edit - preferably safe routes, as I'm recovering from an eye operation and will be riding with one eye!

Out to Chappies I suppose. We will be passing there tomorrow at around 8:15 if you want to join.

I'll only be leaving Gauteng on the 28th Patch - to Hermanus till the 1st then Sea point till the 9th.

Definitely Atlantic route to Chappies and back. (You are not supposed to ride beyond the lookout point at the top of Chappies, but most riders ignore that and carry on anyway. How else can you get your coffee and croissant from the Noordhoek Farm Village? The Noordhoek side of Chappies is closed to cyclists only, because of the small risk of falling rocks, but it is open to cars.) Safe from a crime point of view, but watch the traffic, especially through Clifton and Camps Bay where it is narrow. Otherwise it is mostly nice and wide with a good shoulder.

If you have a small group, then the cycle lane out to Blouberg and Melkbos is also great. The only danger there is a short section where it crosses the N1 and where there were some mugging incidents. Two or 3 guys together will be fine. So, safe from a traffic point of view.

I will be arriving in Cape tomorrow night and staying at my parents in the Southern suburbs (Pinelands) will be going out most mornings around the peninsula if anybody is looking to join.

Will also do the argus route one morning, maybe can get a "vaalie" group together to show the Capies how its done.

Post time and meeting place a day or so before and a few will most likely join up. What is your expected Argus time? that will give people an idea of whether they are too fast or too slow. I live in Mowbray, quite close, but I'm working right through, so my timing is a bit problematic over the holiday season, I just ride whenever I can.

For Argus i am looking at sub 3 but im not training at a high intensity at the moment, so will be more social type rides.

Close to the mountain is a big area. I am in Tamboerskloof, and maybe having a tourist to show around early in the morning will be just what I need to get up early for a dawn patrol

The roads along the coast gets hectic especially late mornings. Riding on the 26th may not be wise as the entire WC flock to the beach.

From past experience early morning 5am rides are best or rather ride the 27th when the roads are less busy.

Agreed Boxing day is chaos for the beach front. However have you seen the weather for the day. Cloudy with an active South Easter. I think ill attempt a Century ride after all!

Thanks for all the input guys.  I really appreciate it.  None of my riding mates are heading down to CT so I'm on my lonesome looking to get a bit of saddle time in.

I'm staying in Plattekloof.  Does that help?

Plattekloof: yeah, not nearby. That's a mountain, but not THE mountain.

In your area will be Majik forest, Bloemendal, Contermanskloof, Hoogekraal, etc. Not very familiar with the area as I stay in town. But I'm sure someone will help you out there. Judging by the numbers of riders I see out there you should get sorted out pretty quick. I think all of those are easily riding distance for you. If you have transport, well: you have stellenbosch, wellington, paarl, somerset-west all within easy 50km reach. And just a little further gets you to Grabouw and so on.
