This has been discussed quite a bit the last few weeks but since you new lets start the war !!

Well it depends what you want the device for ? IMO if you gonna do the roadie thing go for the light Polar option but if you gonna MTB and like to MTB where no roadie has been before get the Garmin .

While we are here :

Garmap, suppliers of maps for Garmin GPS devices, has announced the release of the latest maps for South and Southern Africa, the Garmap African Series 2008.

?The African Series 2008 maps are a great advance on the prior release,? says Jason Theunissen, Sales Director of Avnic Trading, Garmin?s exclusive distributors in South Africa. ?The new release expands on both the quality and the quantity of map information. In addition to greatly extended coverage of small towns and villages, there are routable tracks in game parks and reserves and thousands of additional Points of Interest. We are not only telling you where you are, but adding more information on what is around you.?

The new series Southern Africa Streetmaps covers South Africa and 8 other countries (Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia) in one routable map set, allowing you to navigate and plan routes throughout the Southern Africa region. It includes over 675000 km of routable roads and more than 140000 Point of Interest. The Topo and Recreational maps include all the information in the Streemaps but with Topo information such as contours and land usage as well.

New additions to the series are the Southern Africa Streetmaps DEM (Digital Elevation Modelling) which display maps with elevation shading information for the latest units from Garmin like the Colorado, which can show maps with a 3D-like appearance, and the South Africa Waterways maps which add depth contours for three major dams and show rivers and streams.

To purchase or upgrade maps, customers need to purchase the data DVD from one of Garmin?s many outlets, then go to www.garmap.com to purchase an unlock key.

Customers who purchased a map set on or after 1 January 2008 will qualify for a free unlock key to the 2008 series equivalent.

I have the 305 edge and have had some dealings with the 725 polar.

im my opinion the edge is far more user friendly with regards to downloading and accessing data and has more on screen display you have at least 6 displays at a time and you can choose whatever you want.

weight wise i have never weighed the two so could not answer that as for size the 305 is not much bigger that the polar

just find the polar alot more mind boggelling and that is my opinion mind  you

I got all these Gadgets and the one is as easy to use as the other (once you worked with one) . The Polar gives you what you most probably want : Speed , HR , distance , cadence (if fitted) , altitute , temp bla bla bla . The Polar you can wear to church , the Edge looks a bit over the top on your wrist . Edge is nice if you got lotsa bikes and you grab the first one you see in the garage on your next ride . Pop GPS into pocket and it will log all relevant data .

hagar, just press the big red button!  Easy.

To me the main failing of the Garmin is battery life.  No way you can do real long mtb race or rides with it and that is where it is really useful!  Doing Trans Baviaans or the Epic with the Garmin is impossible.  It really eeds improved battery life before I switch.

I sold my first Garmin after a year, I was fed up with the battery life and bad signal. Bought a Polar 725x instead.

I've order a 51 channel GPS logger from bidorbuy to do my mapping, even the edge 705 only has 12 channels. Cost with shipping just over R900.

Now I can use the GPS with any bluetooth cellphone, laptop or PDA.

The claimed battery life is 25 hours. The device can export your maps to google earth.

Well if that's the case take A Delphi 6, and then the damn thing stays on the bike where it belongs, and you don't run the risk of looking like a ponce with your Polar in a board meeting...

Ja, but it's not fun when you are going up the Neverender 02:00 in the morning and your Garmin dies on you and you end up in Plett rather than Jeffreys cause you missed the way point!
