Good day...

I've made a list, well at the moment it's a very short list, of some mountain passes i would like to ride this year and beyond...

And on my list is "The Mother of All Mountain Passes".... Sani Pass

Now to do this there is obviously a lot of planning involved.

I would like to find out from fellow hubbers that have done this pass before to help in some much needed advice please?

From where is the best place to start? What time of year is the best time to do this? ect ect...

Any advice will be appreciated

Cheers

Start at Backpackers and it is best in Winter when it is not so hot.

This!

Not much else is needed, take some water, have a beer at the top, ride down... I did it as an extra day after Sani2c in 2013, was actually my TBT post on Instagram a few mins ago :)

Lots of fun and a bucket lister!

they approved it in 2014 but then again this is good old south Africa it may never happen

It WILL hopefully never happen. The road will be in good condition for 6 months if that and will then be near impossible to access with any mode of transport once nature starts to play havoc with it.

When I took my parents up in a 4x4 a few years back I had forgotten my passport but managed to cross it there AND back. I was worried I wouldn't manage to get back into RSA but again they didn't check properly. It would have been a long walk along the escarpment to Rhino Peak and down to the Drak Gardens Hotel via the Mashai pass.

we did the sani dragon last year..... lets put it this way i was contemplating riding off the pass, or throwing my bike off the pass....... this is no joke, 20% gradient at some point.

was running 1x10  (32-11-40)

sense of humor failure at its best..... i was so happy to see that pub on top of sani pass you have no idea.

also the air at that altitude does affect your performance, its thin and you breathe a lot heavier.

on your trip down, hang on... you get speed rapidly

Agreed.... There is safe parking at the back packers & a hot shower once done! This assuming your accommodation is not near by.

Be aware of changing weather conditions!
