Something like this

Not a bad idea, but the the thing is, you want to avoid affecting previously unaffected areas with new welding. I've done some reading up on the subject and the bottomline is this:

The frame is most likely made of 6061-T6, where the T6 means the heat-treated condition. T6 is basically the hardest, strongest condition. the only way you can get it to that condition is to heat-soak the entire frame to 500 degrees, then quench it (cool it down quickly), then straighten it since it probably would have distorted during quenching, then heat it up again to around 180 degrees for 4 hours to allow the relevant microstructure to form. Then you have T6. What I've got now is still a mostly T6 frame but the piece just next to the weld called the heat affected zone is most probably annealed back to condition O (annealed state). Unfortunately condition O is much weaker than T6. Anyway, there is such a thing as "natural ageing" of 6000 series aluminium, so I'm hoping for some of that to occur - basically the microstructure improves slightly over the next 20 days or so.

I'm planning to stress-test it with a rocky ride this weekend. Worst case for this weld is sitting on the saddle with a back-pack on, going over roots and rocks and stuff. Worse still if you have long legs and the saddle is high, like mine.

Happy ending to my cracked Anthem. Nice new frame and my 1st experience with 1 x 10, also got the 780 wide Rapide bar.post-54517-0-22676300-1454151749_thumb.jpgpost-54517-0-80476500-1454151786_thumb.jpgThat bar is wide.

Thanks to Giant and my LBS.

Someone should start an anti anthem thread like the one they have going for specialized.

I cant believe that there is such a following for giant products when its evident that many of their frames crack at the top of the seatpost join.

I happen to ride past a guy on a giant xtc at the porcupine ridge event this weekend that had that happen to him too. A clean break on the weld. Hilarious to see the bike articulating up the climbs :-)

Its nice to support a brand that swaps out frames so easily, id prefer to support a brand that simply makes awesome reliable bikes that dont snap (as often).

Something like this

The one on the left involves less welding which equals less heat.

Probably only needs the top one and not the bottom.

I dont think there is a single manufacturer that doesnt have that design in play on their soft-tails except Giant although i do notice on their Trance they have a bend in play. Not sure how many frame replacements have been carried out on the trance for the same issue, its a popular bike too.

comes down to their lifetime warranty I suspect. You get a brand new frame every X years and of course you will get the latest tech changes as part and parcel. In a way the consumer scores if you have to think about how "standard" have changed recently.

Its like those throw-away cameras, use and moer weg...the new one will be shinier, have a brand new paintjob, come with the latest standards...you just need to build components over.

One thing is for sure, you don't buy a giant secondhand no matter the price.

Ironically they have awesome re-sale value, if you can find them. On a separate note, they happen to be one of the most sought after bikes by the thieves too. A mate had his Anthem Advanced stolen at the last Burger MTB event right from the race village, security had advised that they seem to be the most popular at the race events.

Interesting although I suspect its purely because of numbers. I doubt thieves know the difference between an anthem and a 110. I am might be wrong but ja.

Giant's recipe is actually a good one, extremely good value complete bikes(they obviously have huge clout with component manufacturers), lifetime warranty and a easy warranty process from what I have hear. They stand by their product that is for sure.

Couple of wood splints and cable tie's possibly?

Any chance you can trace the original owner?

If you buy second hand, keep the original owners details. Most decent guys would be willing to facilitate the claim on your behalf.

I made that offer when selling my Anthem last year. Awesome bikes.

The tech upgrade is all good and well but it might also add costs when it means the seatpost doesn't fit, or hub spacing changes, etc.

But yes, I will probably always support Giant, but as a first owner only.

Sure, isn't that fraud though, serious question?

I have no doubts on their value proposition as a original owner. As a second one, it almost feels a bit like an alfa.

I would like to know too, that is a good question.

So then i beg the question, if i lend my anthem out to lets say my brother and while he is riding it it brakes, do i still claim it or is that seen as fraud as well? There is no registration papers or anything saying that the new guy is the owner of the bike?

I think its more a moral thing i guess. Dont know what Giant's official stand on this.

Look I don't think they will call the cops...lol. Suppose it is a moral thing

Giant's official stance is original owner only...How they enforce it, I don't know.
