Timing Chips

Hi guys

Wasn't sure where to post this - apologies if it is the wrong area!

I'm new to the forum and I'm afraid I have some really silly what, how and why questions.

So, mid to long-term I want to start participating in events, and want to be able to view my timing online.  I'm far from a professional rider, but it'd be great to track my progress.

Got chatting to someone at a recent event and he was talking about a chip that he was wearing which measures timing etc.

I've googled this and tbh I'm as confused as hell as to how to get one.

So, this is what I need to know:

1. Do I need to be a member of a club or association?

2. Do I need different chips for different events?

3. How much do they cost?

4. Is there a subscription fee?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

When you enter for a race like CTCT they will require you to have a chip Like Racetec.

You can get your first one at the registration for about R 120 odd.

No subscription or any other fees thereafter.

Check out http://racetec.co.za/. They keep all the timings of the races they do. You do not need to be a member of anything. Just buy the chip when you do the first race, mount it on your bike or ankle and there you go. It records the times when go over the starting and finish mats.

Hi Sundance.

1stly welcome to TheHub, I Hope you will enjoy your stay here. Only rule is if you want to start a rant, Do it on a Friday.

Back to your qu, A racetec timing chip is compulsory for all "major" road races. You can check on racetec.co.za and contact them. All you have to do is mount the chip to your front fork during races which racetec do the timekeeping for(majority of the SA road races) and all your times will be uploaded automatically onto their website, and if you are looking to race competitively, all races timed will help you receive a better seeding for future races.

Also, if you want to track and keep record of your training rides, Download Strava.com or Endomondo.com. These are great apps to track your training almost instantaneously.

Cheers,

Rory

Do you want your timing from events only or do you want to track your training as well?

I am assuming, and may be wrong that you dont know about strava, it keeps a log of your rides and you compare your efforts and track your performance over time.

You can use your phone or a entry level garmin edge 20 for R2750

Usually when you enter a race online you will be asked if you have a timing chip and if not then you will be requested to buy one which you collect when you collect your race pack.

It depends on which company is doing the timing.. but just ask when you collect your race number and goodie bag (if applicable) and they will direct you to where to collect your timing chip.

You fix it onto your bike else using an ankle strap and will record your start and finish time when you do a race.

You can keep track and see how you improve with each race via their website.  You can also see how your seeding improves.
