UK Anti-Doping chief Nicole Sapstead admits to struggling to contain an issue that is rife in lower-level sport

What is less understandable, perhaps, is doping in amateur sport; the Middle-Aged Man in Lycra who dopes to win a club race in front of one man and his dog; the 18-year-old on a semi-pro domestic team doping to win the junior national 10-mile TT.

Seems to becoming the norm in amateur ranks where it is believed that the chances of getting tested are minimal

Everyone likes going fast, doping is a shortcut to that. I reckon, also, people don't give much thought to the side effects. After all, you see the likes of the pro peloton and all its hangers on, hale and healthy after decades of drug use.

People are so desensitised to doping in cycling. It's never a shock when a person its bust and you never hear about the side effects, the legacy and the health issues that it causes. It's becoming 'normal' and that trickles down.

People like to win, beat people and stand on that step above their peers. So much so that they will happily delude themselves they got there legitimately because they are never going to get caught at that level.

The unfortunate fact is that getting good at anything takes work, effort and sacrifice. Not just the click of a mouse.
