1 x conversion but using both chainrings

i train plenty but we have actual hills down here and on Saturdays race at Wartburg there was one certain hill that saw probably 80% of the field walking...thus a backup granny would be really helpful

 

I think this is a good idea. For the 28 t you don't need a narrow wide if you are just going to use it on very steep hills. So it would be relatively cheap to prototype.

 

I rode the steep hill on Sunday at Wartburg on a 1x10, it was really at the limit of my 40 t at the back.

I'm all for doing things 'differently' but this is one of the few times I say is a 1* right for you? Perhaps rather stay with or go back to a 2* groupset done properly i.e. with an FD and shifter ....

i hear you and it might end up reverting to normal 2x. i think 90% of the time the 32t oval i have will be fine but there will be that odd occasion where its either walk or possibly just slip the chain onto a small granny. Also i wanted to free up my bar space for a possible dropper post remote

Agreed and same for me, this an experiment, if not why not. :thumbup:

I would recommend just running 1x without that extra chainring upfront which wont be necessary if you running a 11-42 cassette.

If you compare a oval with a standard they say

32 (oval) - 33 (normal)

 

so its not that much harder.. it obviously depends on your fitness and type of riding.

i currently run 1x with a 34 up front and a 36-11 and its going well :) :)

i was used to 24/38 up front with 11-36 back, so 32 oval and 11-42 at back is about 7% harder which doesnt sound like much but it is when you on the limit. So anyway i think i have my answer that it is possible to do it so i will try...nothing ventured nothing gained  :thumbup:

I may do this on my son's bike. He is 34 front with a 1x10. The crank is an SLX crank which originally had three chain rings on it, and we do have the old small ring lying around. Think it was a 24 or something.

 

I'll put it on, don't say anything, one day when he is moaning after a hard race I may mention that actually he still has three easier gears on his bike than the 34 / 40.

 

Like this chap I knew who had a mazda 323, for years he drove it thinking it had 4 gears. One day his friend drove after he had too many beers and his friend changed into 5 th gear. Turns out the engine was not a mazda engine but something else.

Sorry to be pedantic and nitpick your story, but what has the motor to do with the number of gears in the gearbox?

The previous owner changed the 1300 to a colt 1600 and used the 1600 gearbox too.

Why force your son to push bigger gears? There is nothing wrong with spinning.

The whole idea just seems counter intuitive. Its more of a 'put a slice in your back pocket just incase' rather than a 'have your cake and eat it' idea. Going 1 x 10 means finding your perfect compromise bewteen cluster range and front ring size. If you can't find that compromise then stick with 2x10.
