Just make sure you use a proper insurer. You don't want to ride on a repaired Ritte

So apparently MiWay outsourced for the x-rays to be done on the weld and this is the images I got in the report today:

The findings:

Unfortunately for MiWay and the supplier of this x-ray report, I actually develop x-ray machines and I know quite a bit about x-ray imaging for different materials etc so this would not have gotten them anywhere if they still insisted in fixing and not replacing the swing arm (which they now did - still waiting for the money though).

I just hope the images I received (as the attachment) was not the only one he based his conclusion on.

*Now I don't think I will disclosed which person did it at which company - because THAT will open a WHOLE other can of worms regarding competency I think.*

Perhaps you could allude to who, so that they can possibly be avoided.

Or how about some pointers for what one should look for from such an x-ray investigation, in case we should find ourselves in such a position as you, without your knowledge?

PS how does a crack, and a fatigue crack look different from an x-ray? Can one normally see striations? Eish, NDT was too long ago for me to remember.....

Also ask them if the repairer then carries a warranty on their work, as you might lose manufacturer warranties if repaired....

Warranty is the drop in the bucket:

Imagine you go down chappies at 90+km and the front wheel disintegrate.

What does ANY warranty help then?

Hayley, this is the kind of story that nightmares are made of.

I hope for your sake that Miway replace the parts with new parts.

What I can suggest, I would ask the "specialist" to produce his qualifications,

His research proving that the swingarm can be bent/repaired,

His facts that he bases his results upon,

Ask him if he knows what material the swingarm is made of,

Ask if he knows the composition of the alloy. You get aluminium, aluminium and aluminium.

Ask for the textbook/article proving that type of alloy can be repaired and ask for details of the specific method he followed to repair the frame.

Ask if these are the only X-rays he took, he should have taken x-rays at at least two angles.

I would get all of that information in writing and then ask Miway to sign it. This way if that swing arm bends or breaks while you are riding, you have a case against them. Also, if they don't sign it, which they probably will not, you can send this to Carte Blanche.

I would suggest that you send the swingarm for a NDT at a professional engineering facility before you ride it again. Will be interesting to see their report.

I have subsequently cancelled my membership with Miway because of this thread..

Thank you for your input and after many emails and arguments with them I have received the money in my account today to cover a new swing arm from Intense.

I have verbally and over email communicated most of the things you mentioned above and that is why they sent me that 'attempt' at a x-ray report which I obviously told them I can do nothing with.

Last week Wednesday one of the claims managers phoned me and in the 21+min conversation the things that came out regarding how they handle claims was: "Our 1st solution/aim is to check if it can be fixed, if not then we will replace it. Clearly you can think that we cannot just replace bikes which costs the prices of cars these days, our business will not survive."

Many other things were said like "our monthly premiums are very competitive for what one is covered" after which my reply was "I will pay double if I know I will actually be covered in an event of a accident/failure".

He also mentioned them launching new bicycle products soon and that they do what they can for the riders because they know what riding means to the cyclists after which he mentioned that is why he hope that incidents like this will not give them a bad name. I wish I had all this in writing to give proof here, but I am sure that if what I am saying/trying to quote from memory (and a few dotted down rough notes) is not correct that MiWay are welcome to come post the recording on here.

Life is a bit crazy the last couple of weeks for me (this is a drop in the bucket to what all has happened), but I do plan to take this further and get more of these type of stories together because I feel that if I did not know what I do about bicycles or engineering that I would have 'been taken for a ride' and I think there are many others that are.

I am so glad im not with MiWay

I'm glad that I dropped DIY insurance 13 years ago when someone broke into my Toyota Tazz 13 years ago while on holiday. At that point I was pointed to the fine print to why my claim was rejected and I decided to rather use a broker going forward. I had a few claims since (2 small car accidents and 1 claim where my Thule bike rack failed and I had 2 bikes fly from my car roof). No issues whatsoever.

That is the problem right there.. They insure your bikes at replacement value but then try to fix them.

That is not "Putting you in the same place as you were before the accident".

Edit:

Glad you got paid out!

Well things are not going Miway at this stage!

Damaged frame, got and report from the autherized dealer and the they recommend replacemet of the frame, contacted the manufacturer and they confirm also warrenty is not valid any more and also recommend and frame replacement.

Not Miway no,no Mr Ian will deside! But what they not realized is who will carry the warranty and liability if something happens while I'm on the bike, Miway are deffinatly not putting you where you were before the accident/damage.

Ladies and gents this must stop at almost R500/month premium just for bike insurance they surely can't just keep on repairing our bikes! You don't see them replacing vehical parts with refurbish parts, no if the bumper is damged it gets replaced with an NEW one! Now why can't they do the same for our bikes. If it is an high risk item, increase the premuim to make sure they will be able to cover when needed, or don't offer the service Miway! Surley Miway don't realize why we specify these items!

Meantime I'm with no bike, 36One is next month, Magalies Monster, Mokala etc.

Will my bike be ever the same...don't think so, will I be able to sell it afterwards....who will buy it if they know and how will I be able to do something like that to an fellow cyclist with the same passion!

We need to stop the current way of Miway's firtst solution/aim!
