11-32 cassette - road

I've got a standard short cage 11sp Ultegra on a standard FSA crank running a 11 - 32 cassette.

Installing it was no worries, you don't need the long cage. Just let out the limiter screw. There is an aussie guy on youtube that has a video about it. Some bikes can take it some can't. My Evo can.

I've cross chained it, ridden it in both big and small blade and it has't skipped a beat. I'm coming back from injury, off a compact crank and a massive drop in fitness. I don't use it all the time but it's a pretty nice to come off a steep climb with the legs spinning, feeling fresh and able to put the hammer down straight away with out working out the lactic acid from peddling squares on a smaller ratio.

Don't worry, it's not a slight on may manhood. I've still got 53 / 11 just like all the macho guys with a 11 - 24 got the back. :)

Thanks for the feedback...

Do you have to remember not to change to 28 and 32 while on the big blade or does it not want to go, and serves as a reminder?

Or if you forget, does it end badly? chain getting jammed or some other calamity.

If I was going this route I was just going to change the rear mech but maybe if I don't have to...

If it does go in there it actually gets stuck. The rear mech gets stuck between the 32 and the 28 gears. If it does go in while on the 53 Imust go down into the 39 front to slacken up the chain.

You not supposed to cross chain in anycase although with Sram Force and Red and can use all 22 gears.

Cheapest route is to buy the 11-32. If it works as is, perfect, else you need the longer mech

Argh I'm such a loskop... I cross chain by accident all the time but my set up is happy on the 28-50. but I do feel embarrassed when I get off and see that horrible chain line!

Been running a 11-32 with DA9000 RD for almost 2 years, have even changed cranks from 53/39 to 50/34 and back again.  All be fine, no particular jumps going to 32... often climb in 25 or 28, but is nice to have when the pace is chilled and can drop to 32 and spin the legs and save some energy.

hmm interested in this thread.

What about DI 2 with dura ace shifters and an XTR rear mech with a wide range cassette like the new ones - you could almost get a single ring in front....

54 if you want...

Any idea if it would work?

I run a 1x setup with an 11-32 cassette and don't notice the jumps.  In fact, now that I've used this I find it annoying having to shift 2/3 gears at a time when I go back to a narrower range cassette....

Think about it this way - an 11-32 11sp cassette has the same jumps as an 11-28 10sp cassette, but you just get the extra 32t cog...

I know it's not fashionable but I love to cross chain. Surely in this day with improvements in tech and products our group set isn't going to commit suicide because it's too fragile to resist a little 52 28 action!?

I get that I can get the same ratio on the smaller ring but there it never feels as right. Maybe it's because on the bigger ring you feel like you're pushing and on the smaller ring you're pulling.

Interesting idea... sounds expensive!

Weird related question. I am currently on an 8 speed cassette with a 30/50 front and 12/21 back.

Would I need to change wheels entirely in order to go 11 speed 11/28 at the back?

This is a good point. I often have to shift 2/3 gears anyway... I have found sometimes when I'm sitting in the group and I'm slightly uncomfortable that I'm shifting up and down but can't find the right gear... but maybe it's just because the pace is slightly out of my comfort zone and no gear is going to be comfortable.

You would need new shifters rear mech, some wheels can go from 8 to 11 if you are lucky.
